ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Government of the Virgin Islands will be investing some $50K into local Virgin Islands artists as a means to push local musical talent and help each artist grow in their respective field.

This was announced briefly by Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) during a press conference held yesterday, June 2, 2023.

Money is an investment - Premier Wheatley

“The government is investing $50,000 into our Virgin Islands Artists, this investment is to help our artists to grow, develop, and take their artistry to the next level,” he said in a brief statement.

The Premier added that the money and its investment will be managed by the VI Festival and Fairs committee, with more announcements to come through the committee.

“We have artists in the Virgin Islands who have a great deal of promise, a great deal of talent and I wanted to help support these artists to take their artistry to the next level.  It could be that artists need to be able to facilitate partnerships with international recording artists,” he said.

The Premier said that the financing could be to support artists in various other ways, but he detailed that the money is not a loan and would not have to be paid by the artists, however, the Festival & Fair Committee will determine the best use of the money for each particular artists.

Raising the profile of local artiste

“But the ultimate goal is to be able to have our artists raise their level to be able to be more successful as artist, greater visibility to have better quality sound, better quality songs that hopefully will make international airways,” he said.

The Premier added that success for local artists will mean more promotions for the VI as a result of the investment the government is putting in, “They are already ambassadors for the BVI, they will be even better ambassadors for the BVI as a result of the investment,” he added.

Nothing that the government does will please anyone. That's the way it is and that is the way it would be. Some people thrive on criticism

Some of us hate to see taxpayers money spent on sh`**, especially when we have so many other challenges that they claim there is no money to address. I’m sorry if that offends you.

Any vessel can only hold up to its capacity. The money need to be invested in creating depth. To be successful on the international scene you must have a world view.

50 grand, is a paltry sum for such an occasion as this!

What I hope you would do, is reconsider, and give 500 grand instead, for such a worthy cause!!

You mean to tell me that the BVI had a big party at the airport the day the planes made their inaugural flight; dancers, moko jumbie, food, drinks, dancing, etc, and Sowande you now telling the BVI that that was not enough that you going now spend taxpayers money on this nonsense?? Great, the planes are now coming to the BVI. We greeted them at the airport and you still coming with this?? Get over it! Get over yourself! I feel disappointed big time. I can see that we are heading for a UK takeover!
