Gov’t boasts of freedom of information '& when you go you can’t get it'- Cindy Rosan
Ms Rosan was at the time speaking as part of a panel discussion on the June 20, 2023, edition of ‘Da Morning Braff’ radio show on Tola Radio VI 100.5 FM on the topic of a Freedom of Information Act.
According to Ms Rosan, accessing information from the government remains a challenge, “It’s supposed to be freely available to you anyway, and they would tell you it’s available and when you go to you can’t get it,” she added.
Mrs Rosan; however, did not state in that instance what information she was requesting and when was she denied access to said information.
“The Freedom and Information Legislation and whatever is setup to go with that… the office and so, when you go and request information from a government department, they have to give it to you and if you don’t, you can drag the government into courts for not giving us the information,” she added.
Freedom of information legislation a promise
Freedom of Information legislation was on the agenda of former Premier Andrew A. Fahie's administration since 2021; however, the draft legislation was never brought to the House.
Current Premier Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) in 2022 had admitted that the promised legislation is one he intends to act on, even as the government was focusing on implementing COI reforms.
“I believe in freedom of information… having more information accessible to the people is something that the Virgin Islands Party Administration committed to in its manifestos,” he said during an August 2022 press conference.
