Gov’t agencies lagging behind on info & data collection – deCastro

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – One talk show host finds it “annoying and disrespectful” over the slow pace in which Government agencies churn out information or statistics on many of the social problems in the Territory.

Speaking on “Straight Talk” last evening May 16, 2012, host Donald deCastro, who stated his show is about getting the facts straight, complained about his painstaking wait in getting snippets of information, and the “ridiculous policy of a one man job”.

“Somebody goes on vacation in a Government office, nobody else can assist until he or she returns, but if that person dies and don’t come back to work that work goes down the drain because nobody knows nothing about it. It’s annoying, and it’s disrespect to the people of this Territory who want information,” he told listeners.

According to the outspoken host, a few months ago he went to the Magistrate’s Court to get information on the number of men and women taken to court for child support. Up to now, he said he has not received the information, despite following the necessary procedure of making a formal written request.

“I met someone working there on the streets recently and she gave me some story...am still waiting on the information. I think they are just not doing their jobs,” he charged.

He also lamented that he was looking for a breakdown on the 93 children born to expatriates for 2010, but to date that data is unavailable.

Meanwhile, one of his guests Attorney Mary Lou-Creque, pointed to the fact there is the Development Planning Unit (DPU) that is supposed to have all that information, which should be processed, analysed and shared with the public.

It was only last week FSC published its statistics for December. FIVE MONTHS! And they have all this stuff on a computer - all they have to do is click a button.

All of a sudden this is a problem? Where were the reports from concerns voiced on talk shows 1,2,3yrs ago? All of a sudden we got problems? Please. if I was NDp I was sending home all Gov workers and tell them reapply. Yes, i know in reality it can't happen but that's what should've been able to happen. a set of time wasters, weed out the bad ones, keep the good ones, get things going. sick of it, we spend 60% of our budget on a set of free loaders with almost nothing in return.
