ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has praised Governor Daniel Purce for what he called a "fair, balanced, and factual" press briefing during his first Quarterly Review of the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) Recommendations in the Virgin Islands.

This comes as Governor Pruce in his CoI Quarterly review published on May 24, 2024, shared plans to request a final extension of the deadline for the full implementation of reforms in the VI from May 31, 2024, to August 31, 2024.

“I endorse the Review and its content, which reflect the work our respective teams have produced. The greater focus given to the delivery of the implementation of the recommendations since the establishment of the Governance Reform Coordination Centre and the onboarding of the Governance Reform Manager is evidenced in the Review, he said in  a statement today, May 27, 2024.

Premier Wheatley said the shared commitment by the Governor and him to meeting the recommended August 31, 2024 deadline is grounded in enhanced levels of collaboration, coordination, and communication between and among the respective teams and all stakeholders.

Premier confident of meeting final deadline

“I am confident that we will achieve the recommended deadline jointly agreed. I am also pleased that we can continue our current working arrangement without additional powers being granted to the Governor. This is a testament to our shared confidence that the joint plan submitted to the Minister for Overseas Territories, Honourable David Rutley, is both realistic and achievable,” he said.

The Premier detailed that beyond implementing the CoI recommendations, his Government has committed to ongoing reforms based on the CoI recommendations and other reforms to ensure the massive changes coming out of the implementation of the recommendations are institutionalised and integrated into the daily workings of the Government.

“Beginning immediately, we have stepped up our level of public engagement and communication. We will be keeping the public and media updated on progress through weekly updates on the CoI and the Government of the Virgin Islands websites and other platforms,” he added.

As of May 23, 2024, the Governor said the total number of recommendations completed stands at twenty-nine out of forty-eight and four additional recommendations have been completed since January, and nineteen remain.

I am tired of reading flattery and over-hype damaging pretentious lies from our current Premier. As many and I see it even before now, our Premier and probably all the others members of the Cabinet have now intention of fulfilling the 48 CoI recommended recommendations. Such ducking or dodging tactics is to make it appears as if they are too complicated to comply with.
My opinion is that the Premier, particular is determine to resist and frustrate Governor Purse for as long as possible. Such behavior is a tactical, but dangerous misjudgment by our current Premier.

Oh, please allowed me one question. Which of the nine district has the biggest potholes in the roads in the BVI? There are many. My guest is the 7th district. What is yours?

If the governor has the power to implement the COI's recommendation he would. There's nothing the premier can do to stop him. Perhaps the governor doesn't have that power and is stalling until he gets it. The constitution suspension is a bluff. It's an easy said but if challenged it may become a legal quagmire.

Take a breath, it's called management technique, governor don't want it to look like a bashing or continuation of one governor to the next as on white superior authority, but wait for it to come by as diplomacy, them harsh as can be. But wait! Why do I have to recognize the governor when it's white institutionalized power over black people going on past so call emancipation?
