“I hope that the Governor and all elected representatives are listening. These rights that we are talking about here tonight are not simple matters. And if this Government does not take common sense into place and understand that what we are trying to do and trying to work with them, this Government could eventually be sued for millions of dollars,” Maduro said. ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Radio talk show host and social commentator Edmund G. Maduro said it is in the power of the people to sue the Government of the Virgin Islands for being forced to lose their private insurance, with the coming on stream of the mandatory National Health Insurance (NHI).

Maduro was speaking on Tuesday night November 3, 2015 as a guest on Speak Out BVI hosted by Doug Wheatley and aired on ZBVI 780 AM. He went through great pains to explain the rights of persons not only under the VI Constitution but under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

“I hope that the Governor and all elected representatives are listening. These rights that we are talking about here tonight are not simple matters. And if this Government does not take common sense into place and understand that what we are trying to do and trying to work with them, this Government could eventually be sued for millions of dollars,” he said.

Reason being, he said, is that many VIslanders have insurance with several independent insurance companies not only in the territory but outside of it.

“Even the millionaires that come to live among us, they have the same connections and the Government cannot tell any individual how to rule their lives. And it is something that our elected representatives are not looking at,” he said.

Premier's statement shortsighted

Citing what Premier Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith purportedly said on another news site, he said that it is short-sightedness on the part of the Leader of the country to say that there might be changes made to the NHI in its current form to accommodate the concerns of the NHI Concerned Citizens and Residents Group, of which Maduro is part.

“What does he mean by might? There must be changes. And all we are trying to do is work with him so that he could understand what he is dealing with because it is apparent that the Government does not understand the internationality or the constitutionality of the human right to life,” insisted Maduro.

The NHI Concerned Citizens and Residents Group on October 13, 2015 had submitted a petition with over 700 signatures to Premier Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith at a meeting which had been described as good natured. However, while the Premier is to formally get back to the group, he reportedly told an online publication that while there will be no halting of the NHI there are likely to be tweaks to accommodate what the petition is asking for.

Noting that the Governor has a major part to play in the entire episode, Maduro asked that he “stop pulling back” and step in to ensure that persons’ rights are upheld.

Why not try to understand that there are real issues at hand with this NHI / human rights thing? For some of us because we don't like the messenger means that we shouldn't like the message.

@ WOW: the last time I check persons with private insurance have the option of holding on to their private insurance along with taking up the government's "mandatory" insurance...the fact of the matter is the government's policy is mandatory BUT you can still hold on to your current private insurance....someone persons will have financial issues trying to maintain the both policies ....
