Gov Rankin proposes war memorial @ QE II Park

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Governor John J. Rankin, CMG has revealed one of the things he hopes to see happen in the Virgin Islands (VI), and it is not wielding his imperialistic power to suspend the Virgin Islands' 50-year-old constitution!

The Governor would like to see a “dedicated war memorial” in the Territory.

This was disclosed by Mr Rankin at a Remembrance Day Ceremony held at Government House on Friday, November 11, 2022.

QE II Park suggested for war memorial

“While I am proud that we have held this service today at Government House, let me tell you of my hope for the future, that we may be able to have a dedicated war memorial in this territory. Perhaps most obviously, across from here in the quiet corner of Queen Elizabeth II Park.

“Remembering those Virgin Islanders who gave their lives in war and where our wreaths can be laid in future years, but for the moment and for today let me thank all of you for being here with us and especially our veterans,” Governor Rankin stated.

Meanwhile, the ceremony was also attended by Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), war veterans living in the Territory, staff of the Office of the Governor and a few civil servants.

Remembrance Day, also known as Poppy Day owing to the tradition of wearing a remembrance poppy, is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth member states since the end of the First World War to honour armed forces members who have died in the line of duty.

What about a memorial for the slaves who were brought here against their will on british vessels and worked on plantations of their British slave owners. You all better remember where you all come from because the colonizers want you to forget. We will remember those who marched in road town against evil propaganda and encourage the young generation to march all now. God save the people of the virgin islands.

Stop talking piss!! Elizabeth became Queen at age 25 after her father died. He did not give her the Virgin Islands. The UK has had a constitutional monarch for hundreds of years before her father. He did not own the BVI. It would have been an act of parliament which NEVER happened!!

“Remembering those Virgin Islanders who gave their lives in war and where our wreaths can be laid in future years, but for the moment and for today let me thank all of you for being here with us and especially our veterans,” Governor Rankin stated.

He specifically said Virgin Islanders. My gosh! So quick to find something negative that you don’t read properly!! That’s one of our biggest problems, so busy looking for negativity we don’t see the positive.

You are obviously not black as you refer to us as “they”. That is an awful statement for you to make. How can you generalize as there are many races from different nations who do not read for one reason or another. You should do some self reflecting for your own improvement.

If you were educated as you wish to intimate by your ignorant statement you will realise that there is now such thing as "blacks" or "whites" and such notion is based solely on 'white supremacist ideology'. But if as you say 'blacks' don't like to read, it is because your kind deprived their enslaved ancestors of that privilege for almost 400 years...so your ancestors created the problem in the first place...400 years of indoctrination doesn't just wipe away with a few decades of perceived freedom. And I say a few decades because it was your kind running the education system until post 1950s.

I think its clear as day virgin islanders comprehend a WAR memorial is totally out of place in our society and if the Gov wants us to go to war and be patriotic they should start by apologizing officially like the Netherlands for the ATROCITIES OF SLAVERY.

In fact if it were put to a referendum no doubt VI landers would vote to remain neutral vs joining any war we are a Christian society for goodness sake. Normalizing war is not right, what war do we have to remember?!

Between wrestling with our local leaders during Covid which was thwarted by an archaic law placing the local Health minister in charge of pandemics, and the body bags they sent after Irma one can only guess they would want to send us to fight at any chance that arises hence the need for a war memorial in advance.

This really their priority more English Propaganda upon VI landers subconcious minds meanwhile we keep calling for an apology that never comes.

The first Black recipient of the Victoria Cross (Britain's highest award for bravery) came from Tortola. He was called Samuel Hodge, and received the award for heroic action in West Africa, in 1866, while serving with the West Indian Regiment. He died in Belize in 1868. He should be commemorated, along with other BVI service men.

It is difficult to see, as a student of history, how Allied victory in WWII is responsible for the "democracy we now enjoy" here in the VI while the abolition of slavery is apparently not, and indeed the centuries of African slavery and its millions killed and enslaved is rather dismissed in your point... Striking.
We can remember those who died in an awful war AND we can remember the horrors of slavery. The latter all the more so as we daily see the ongoing wealth of the UK (in our instance), personal and national, built on the backs of our forefathers. Statue for that? Anyone?

The QEII park is in need of a good cleaning so I suppose hosting an event such as this would cause it to happen and keep it clean. Just take a look at how unsightly this place looks that is actually representing the monarchy. It’s like a forest; a wilderness if you ask me. But just like many other things in the country, maintenance has always been a problem. The sad part though is that it is adjacent to the White House that is always maintained. What a comparison! Shame, shame, shame.

I don't know if it would have been any different for Africans to be under Communism, socialism, or any other "ism" than what African people are experiencing under WS. Nazism and Hitler are the European's assigned boogie men for their evil and destructive acts on humanity particularly when they know that they have produced more than one Hitler and many more Holocausts.

I have been asking a question and everyone has been shutting me up. Even now I may be shut down again. Here it is. If someone stole something from let's say a business place then gave it to A as a means of compensation isn't that theft? Wouldn't A be charged for receiving or handling stolen goods? Here is my question. The Europeans including the British came to the so called "New World" and met these Islands including the BVI. They ran off, or in some instances killed the natives Amerindians, in some Islands, Caribs and Arawaks and stole their lands in the name of their King/Queen. Later they brought Africans to work the land. After the abolishment of slavery they gave the lands to their slaves as a kinda of "payment" How could this be Europeans since the Islands were solen in the first place? What about the decendants of the first natives, Carib, Awaraks and the Amerindians? Shouldn't they be the ones to be compensated? Who should be given reparation? Ok I know I am way off the topic here but since others are using words like colonies slavery etc I am just running my mouth. I am asking to be repatriated to West Africa.

News flash nearly the whole of Africa was colonized by Europeans. Why do you think they speak English in the heart of it. Do you really want to be repatriated there your better off here which has the image of a play ground not a place where people live in poverty or have French trained terrorists running around. The state of the world today is no coincidence history has already been rewritten as they want to do with Russians today. From this we see the script

From the island of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, he was the second black man to be awarded the Victoria Cross after William Hall.”

Samuel Hodge name was invoked as West Indian who serve in the British Army. What war did Hodge serve in the 1800s? What was his job? What were Blacks role in the British Army in the 1800? How come Hodge’s service was not taught in school? How many slaves died through blood, sweat and tears in building wealth for the UK? Is Slavery not worthy of memorial at QEII Park? Former UK-appointed Governor Jaspert brushed off the press’ on reparations for slave descendants in the VI; what is Rankin’s take on reparation? Does he too believe that BVI landmarks named after privates, slave traders, etc should be maintained for historical reason (Jaspert)? Are democratic principles only good/apply for the UK but not for OTs?

Rankin need to bring up suggestions that help us the people that he governs not this idea that helps nobody. I want the UK to bring more assistance in areas of education, healthcare and entrepreneurship. Do a better job in training police and prison officers. The governor does be on the same roads and have no comments or suggestions about just what it going in. Y’all ever wonder why the governor rarely talks about anything we regular folks complain about because he can’t relate to us. Our struggles aren’t his so he doesn’t care. He probably doesn’t see his phone, internet or electricity bill. Every now and then he talks about crime how about talking about these extortion level high rent in the BVI. Just drawing some attention to these matters especially while the Premier them scared as hell as to UK taking over would bring some kinda change.

It’s not a choice between a war memorial or a slavery memorial. We can have both. Maybe we should have one for the English sailors who died on the ships that freed slaves taken by other countries such as the US after the English made slavery illegal. Or one for the Africans enslaved by other Africans and sold to Europeans.

    ?????What is a democracy?
At the most basic level, it is a type of government or political system ruled by citizens, people who are members of a society. In a democracy, citizens hold some level of power and authority, and they participate actively in the political, or decision-making, process of their government.
    IS THIS A DEMOCRACY???

My only say is that whoever was awarded the contract to maintain the Queen Elizabeth Park, need to do the work for their money. The park is POORLY maintained, with grass growing taller than 5 feet at times. When they do groom the grass, its a patchy job with areas around benches in the rough. I walk there at times and is is nothing but a mess. When they are forced to clear the path for persons to walk, they cut it down and leave all the dead grass there. I think Queen Elizabeth, if she was alive, would definitely not want to be associated with that mini forest in town.

Also, can someone tell me why the main entrance to the park is ALWAYS locked?
