VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI- Mrs Shereen D. Flax-Charles has challenged persons who want to change the dates of the Virgin Gorda Easter Festival to go back to their country of birth.

The annual Easter Festival features street parades, a beauty pageant, and various parties. It begins on Good Friday, April 20, 2025, and runs for the entire Easter weekend.

Mrs Flax-Charles said this during the Ninth District Meeting hosted by District Representative Hon Vincent O. Wheatley at St. Mary’s Hall on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, where she accused those who want to change the date of the annual festival as being immigrants into the Virgin Islands.

“Those who are adamant that it should be changed they should try to change it in the country that they are born first before they come here,” she stated.

Mrs Flax-Charles also informed that she has a Facebook page dedicated to this cause called ‘Keep Virgin Gorda Easter Festival at Easter’.

Bring the message to the masses- Flax-Charles

“I know that there is a movement out there wanting us to change our traditional festival. I want to say…bring your message to the masses of the people,” she continued adding that the mission should be to bring sinners into the fold of the Lord by going where they are.

While referring to herself as a “devout Christian”, Mrs Flax-Charles said the Easter Festival is part of Virgin Gorda’s tradition and culture.

Mrs. Flax-Charles also acknowleged that there are some Virgin Gordians who want to change the festival’s date as well.

“Let’s not divide the population over our culture and something that started before most of us were born. Keep Virgin Gorda Festival at Easter,” she pleaded.

Make funds available for the festival committee sooner- Flax-Charles

Mrs Flax-Charles also made a plea for the sister island’s festival committee to receive its funding from the government earlier.

“I’ve been making a plea for probably 20 years for the Festival Committee on Virgin Gorda to be funded in advance. I understand the budget cycle, and it’s January to December however, it is very, very difficult…to get anything done in January, you can’t commit,” she explained.

It was revealed that the committee had yet to receive its funding.

In 2027 she reminded the meeting, the 60th anniversary of the Virgin Gorda Easter Festival will be celebrated.

“We need to do better by the committee and the past committees to fix that so that by September we’re able somehow we must find a way to have some sort of funding available for the committee before January or February or March,” Flax-Charles stated.

Her point is. Non Virgin Islanders should not have a say. This is her point and I agree with her.

Your behavior or tone base on your comment makes me think that you are entitled . You are not entitled! Stop this behavior where you guys think you can come here and dictate our culture and get into our politics. Stay out! Hold your lane!
If a Virgin Islander wants it change that fine. This is their country . They can voice their opinions. Where else would they? Not in your country! Sick ah Also now man. Stay out of bvi business. You come to work . Do that and mind your business! Some of Alyo too fast mehnnn !

Her comment was ignorant. Non-Virgin islanders don't have the power to change the dates so I think she used us as scapegoats to attack the BVIslanders who want to change the dates. We couldn't care less when the festival is, we just want to party. You also sound ignorant and jealous, as a matter fact, let's change the dates!!!! FOH!

Here we have a situation where a politician wants to determine if the territory should have independence, again let our people vote on the matter

The opinion of the people should be the way forward in these modern times

Most Christians usually have their intoxicating near naked dancing festival BEFORE a religious holiday not during one. Fat Tuesday is always BEFORE Ash Wednesday. The annual date of Easter is determined by the first full moon after the spring equinox so its a different date every year. Time has come to abandon a festival on Easter in VG and schedule it for a fixed date every year in May for example.

Fortunately for bvi , expats don't pay these ignorant comments no mind and on the most religious time of year they will be partying with Shereen in the vg village and not boycotting.

Move it to last weekend February to +st monday in March, It should have been this weekend. Also we will have a 5 - 6 months space between each Festival which is good, Easter date not only appropriate but its also to close Tortola Festival date. Tell those weak insecure know it all people to "RELAX & CALM DOWN". Change is a natural part of progressiveness both mentally and structurally. .

It's a shame the bvi is a real funny places is either you born here makes you from here or if your parents or blood line from here which one it is. I Know persons born here no parent ain't from here but chastise the persons that are not from here. Then you have persons ain't born here both parents and grand parents born here and have more rights than who born here. This a whole mix up..like some Spanish they ain't born here but the whole generation before parent grand parents etc did born here so they have even more rights than who was actually born here. So who really is a real from here lol?

A nation that forgets God satan will rule.
Have We forgotten hurricanes Irma, Maria, and COVID I9 pandemic? God's mercy was over the people of the BVI during those dreadful times, it was not easy, but God kept us alive. We shouldn't be celebrating festivals around the easter period. We should celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ in April. Why did they choose to have it in April in the first place?

If she proclaimed to be a devoted Christian she should acknowledge christ over manmade culture that practices drinking alcohol and the type of music been played during Christian acknowledgement of our savior.

A person opinión leads her to tell someone go back to their land of birth? The earth if the lord and fullness, these terms she utter are of the slavemasters the devil yet she say she Christian, a hypocrite, just like the pharisees and scribes

The BVI is out of touch with our neighbors. That is OK, but we should be able to talk about it at a PUBLIC MEETING. The religious holiday is for going to church. The Day before lent is for BIG PARTY. Tourists come and celebrate. Local business make money. But you have to plan this out to give people time to make travel plans.
However, yelling 'I Barn Here!', is not helpful. You were born with 2 ears and 1 mouth, might want to consider using them in that proportion.

I ask that you refrain from spreading lies about our business. It seems you are on a mission to defame our business. You were told already that the Laundry does not have any sewage pipe running to/on/through government roads but yet you get up and talk shit. You were told of the many Septic tanks that we have in our yard but yet you are going around maliciously spreading lies to whom ever you find that will listen to you. Why do you continue this witch hunt on us. Do you want us to invite you to see for yourself? well make sure we can come to see where you and your family have your pipes running for the hotel and Chateau. You forgot the flood expose the many pipes you have running to the same beach you claim other people messing up. Why you don't go to your family that has their dirty stinking water, and sewage running on to our driveway and our property having the area look Nasty. Please tell them fix their pipes. Their building is overloaded, the salon water is running on our property, their apt. have about 5 men to one apt. the pipes are not sealed making the water run onto all the properties nearby and having the landlord and the tenants fall from the very stinking water from your family. Please stop your hipocrisy. Again you are such a liar, You are so hell bent on your hatred on the Laundry, did you forget that when you was in government you cut the road so your family can have their water go the drain, their laundry water is also going to that drain. Tell us where does the hotel Laundry water goes to? All the buildings around that area has water going to the drain so why you on the Laundry? You so envy and bad mind you don't want to see persons prosper. I can assure you we did everything correct and was approved hence the reason we are open. you sound so stupid with your campaign to destroy a young Virgin Islander. Only you all must live. VG people know Pot calling Kettle black. A dam shame. Again I ask that you refrain from spreading lies about our business. Thank you

The love this lady has for Virgin Gorda and the BVI on a whole is obvious. She has always been a champion when it come to cultural matters and tourism. However, the hypocrisy is real. If the ole "go back to your country " talk should be applied then the whole BVI would be empty because the lineage of most of the"native" families comes from different islands. To love the BVI is to know its history and this level of ignorance shows that it comes from personal reasons/opinions/agendas.
I don't know when our eyes will be open to the truth.
