‘Global Glamour’ runway set on fire!
The show was one that was enjoyed to the fullest and not being there at the event, dubbed the Caribbean’s premier luxury fashion event of the year, was certainly an injustice to a great treat. Nevertheless, hundreds filled the venue and patrons themselves seemed set to take the stage with their classy outfits.
The stellar production, which seemed to have left a sweeter taste of fashion and creativity in the Virgin Islands, attracted travelers, media, celebrities and influencers from around the globe.
Producer/Sponsor’s Impression
Mr Terry Donnvan, backed by his production team, did what several persons called an amazing job. Donovan himself was impressed at the way the event turned out. “It was amazing; it was just a beautiful show.” Judging from the feedback from the audience, the applause, cheers and even screams of excitement, Mr Donovan was of the firm impression that everyone had their money’s worth. “I think the event has continued to build and we just have to keep spreading the word and attracting people to the destination for this event,” Donovan commented to Virgin Islands News Online after the show.
Speaking about his vision for Summer Sizzle and his plans for 2014, the producer said that they are looking at extending the event to other destinations around the world. “Right now we are looking at making the event more global and attracting more designers from around the world so we are going to continue to build there.”
This year the Government of the Virgin Islands was a signature sponsor of the event through its Tourism Board and present among many others from the British Virgin Islands Tourist Board (BVITB) was Ms Lynette L. Harrigan. “This has always been a great event and this year it has proven once again to be one of class. It was great to see all the fashion from the USA and elsewhere, the models were great and I think everyone had a wonderful experience here tonight,” Ms Harrigan told Virgin Islands News Online.
“It was something that’s great for the community of the BVI, such fashion such great designers,” Harrigan added.
Speaking about the impact that ‘Global Glamour’ and the other events embodied in Summer Sizzle BVI 2013, Ms Harrigan said, “It always gives an exposure to the BVI because of all the people that actually come with Terry, not only the designers but there is also a large following that comes. We see a lot of the designers from the Caribbean as well so that in itself is great for us in the BVI.”
The ‘Global Glamour’ runway show featured collections from designers such as Anya Ayoung Chee of Trinidad. Anya was the Winner of Project Runway Season 9. International designers also included Cesar Galindo, Irini Arakas from PROVA, Andrew Nowell, most recently featured on BET’s Rip the Runway, Uzuri International from Jamaica, Aqua Couture by Roger Gary, Rich Kim, Andrew Harris from Barbados, Koki Love from India, Kristian Loren, Sandro Romans & Poetic Rhythm from St. Kitts & New York. The VI’s very own talented designers; BayRoc Clothing, Mode de Femme and Trefle Designs completed the line-up of designers showcased at the event.
Male models wowed
Not very often in the VI are large numbers of male models seen on stage but last night could have been safely considered as a night out for the women with a special treat as more than ten male models strutted their stuff on the Runway. Yes there was resounding applause for the female models as even some men who had their women by their sides were seen leaning forward with their mobile phones and cameras especially when the female models stepped out in their bikinis.
The men’s reaction to the female models was nowhere in comparison to that of the ladies in the audience when the men set foot on the runway. It was so hot that had the show gone on for ten minutes more the fire station would have had to be called in with their hoses to soak the room, maybe turning it into a wet-fete, because the women were on fire!
Patrons’ recommendations
“There is no questioning if tonight was great, it was indeed,” said Sylvia Neblette. It was her second year of traveling from the UK specifically for the Summer Sizzle event and she noted that it was one she would rate among the best in the Caribbean. “Fashion show is my take. I am not the party type, cocktail sipping girl, I find my pleasure in travelling the world over for fashion shows and have been to several in the Caribbean and this one has got my annual ticket in advance.”
Ms Neblette, whose opinion was supported by three of her friends, said she sees room for taking the ‘Global Glamour’ runway show to another level. “Let’s make it a true thing, let the BVI have it like no one else does, it’s not hard work but it would involve everyone.” Their recommendation is to include a night that would feature emerging designers from secondary and tertiary schools from around the globe. “We can do with having a beach run dip in the sea or in a pool kind of fashion display, let’s see you put on a fashion show where the single ladies and single men can kneel at the side of the runway. It is already a hot line-up as is but we can turn up the heat and the BVI can be the first at it,” said Neblette.
A Sailing Excursion and Beach BBQ on the island of Jost Van Dyke, VI with a Bon Voyage Karaoke Party at Bamboushay Lounge on Tortola, VI today July 14, 2013 will put the lid on the four days of Summer Sizzle BVI 2013- a event that has set the atmosphere for the upcoming VI Festival 2013.
