Glenroy A. Forbes In! As FS; Neil M. Smith’s return uncertain!
Speaking to our usual senior National Democratic Party (NDP) sources, Mr Forbes is expected to act in the post of Financial Secretary from May 12, 2017 for a period of about six months in the first instance.
According to the same senior source, who is also close to the Minister of Finance Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith (AL), Mr Forbes was to start tomorrow June 1, 2017 but insisted he will not do so "unless the paper work on his appointment is in order."
The NDP source was not clear as to why the paper work was delayed.
FS Smith may never return?
It was on March 27, 2017 when the holder of the post Neil M. Smith was placed on "vacation"; however, everyone has been tight-lipped over two months later on whether he will return to office.
The same senior NDP source told our newsroom that it is more and more unlikely that Mr Smith will return to the post and "if it was not Glenroy, it would be a UK national that does not look like us".
Mr Forbes, the co-founder of the law firm Forbes Hare, was called upon before in 2002 to take over as FS from L. Allen Wheatley, who was also sent on leave from the post and ended up incarcerated over issues associated with his role as FS.
Many claimed that Mr Wheatley took the fall for the elected officials, and it's unclear if history is repeating itself where Mr Smith is taking the fall for out of control politicians.
The British have arrived; Direct rule started?
There are growing concerns that due to the financial mismanagement and reckless spending of the NDP led administration the British Overseas Territory is on the verge of further direct rule from the UK.
Over the past year top key posts in the Virgin Islands civil service have been filled by British Nationals. The Director of Public Prosecutions Ms Kim Hollis QC, the Commissioner of Police Mr Michael 'Mick' Matthews, the incoming Chief Auditor Mr Phil Sharman and the Head of the Prison Mr David Foot are all British nationals whose salaries are being paid from local funds.
In addition, the United Kingdom has appointed an unelected governor in that of John S. Duncan OBE, because we are not an independent country.
