ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Gladys Todman of Baughers Bay pleaded guilty to theft when she appeared before Magistrate Khadeen Palmer on April 7, 2022.

According to Crown Counsel Lyn Dailey, Todman removed cash representing payments to a day care on March 26, 2022.

Todman was caught on CCTV removing the cash from a handbag left in a vehicle in Baughers Bay on the day in question.

‘So long that happened’

According to Dailey, police met Todman at the Road Town Police Station on April 5, 2022, and when she was informed of the report and cautioned, she replied, ‘So long that happened, like two weeks ago.”

Todman was then arrested on suspicion of theft and she subsequently admitted to allegations made against her in an interview with police.

According to Dailey, Todman told police she used the money to purchase sneakers, food and she gave some of the money to her friends.

Bail granted pending sentencing

When asked if she had anything to say, Todman asked the magistrate to be granted bail so she can go to “Sandy Lane” [Safe Haven Transitional Centre] to get food and that she would help to clean up there.

“I was living in Sandy Lane a long time ago, but it didn’t work out. I could go back and beg them but they don’t have space to keep me there right now, but I could go and get food every day.”

Todman, who said she lives in Baughers Bay with her husband, also said she was diabetic and that she receives a food voucher from Social Development every month.

“I on medication for mental health, for cholesterol, for my bladder, for arthritis,” Todman stated in her plea for bail.

The Crown did not object to bail.

Todman is to be sentenced on May 2, 2022, and bail was granted in the interim in the sum of $15,000, with one surety. She is to report to Road Town Police Station every Friday between 6:00 am and 12:00 pm.

Is she mentally competent? We keep failing members of our society that fall in her category ( Yellow,Total and many others). When will the Ministry of Health implement sound policies that assist persons like her. It is not fair to sentence someone like her to jail. She needs a different type of incarceration. So we will continue to use the jail as a mental hospital in stead of finding a real solution.

@help help the Minister is only focused on Virus, vaccines, quarantine, and PCR Testing. He seems to have forgotten that the BVI is facing so many social ills. and so many illnesses such as Diabetes, Cancer, etc. When you look around you see so many mentally ill persons walking the streets. I tend not to look down on them because I don't know their story. I don't know what has brought them to their dark place, but they need help. I don't foresee the Magistrate sending her to prison. She needs help. May God send her the help that she needs.

We don't have time for those type of people they don't have anything to offer. We catch illegal immigrants some with contraband and put them up in a hotel then they escape. We will incarcerate our mentally ill and make their suffering a living hell. Who cares they are not important.

It’s sad really sad many people are self staining their own last name. Now was it ?? i’m sure maybe if they asked whoever is in charge for bit of extra money they might have gotten it! To be labeled as a thief or a rapest is the worst title to have!!

Jail will not help that young lady. We need to have a place for people like her who is not mentally sound. She does not hide from the wrong, but does it anyway. Our government has failed our. Mentally ill. Years ago they were sent to Antigua where they were taken care of and kept off the street. Now we are touting independence and cannot even take care of our people who need special care. That young lady needs special care. Do we have a place to take care of her and others? We need to focus on building a community free of criminal activity. Be careful what you ask for.

Don't be so thoughtright in your comment please. I had the experience with having a close relative being sent to Antigua, as you said, for help. Believe me you don't want to hear how that situation went down.
The gentleman told me personally ,everything that he encountered, and poor fellow who has passed on quite a while would have taken revenge on anyone you told him was from there..
I am glad to this day that he spent most of his time around me that I could have avoided him coming into such contact.
I visited Antigua after and went through that institution, oh it was deplorable. Thank God we no longer deal with Thad.

My take on this is this. That lady she has a mental problem and Government needs to be responsible for what she did. Mental people need to be in mental home off the street. Stop pointing fingers on her family. You do not know what her family is doing for her. That young lady needs to be in a home and people looking after her. Not only her but all who have that same problem. Mental illness is not a crime. Consider what that young lady is going through and find help for her. Do not lock up that lady.

why are some of you trashing this lady, who are you to deride and smear her? Do you know what will be your lot tomorrow? Do you know what it lis not to be in control of your mind? I presume you know, but do not realize that when you blog deplorable things, that you at that point have lost your marbles and cannot contain your perfect self. I pray that you will search yourself, seek forgiveness and repent and be your brethren's keeper.

In reading glady’s words In this story, I can hear her in my head..Gladys will tell you her truth even if it incriminates her, even if it’s a truth that should be kept private from a health prospective.. I will never condone wrong doing but Gladys is mentally ill and prison is NOT the pace for her.. she is mentally ill on medications..it’s our Gov’t’s responsibility to do more for persons like her. Prison is not the answer… does Gladys need to be begging for good or be on the streets, No! I would want to believe that even the judge knows that Gladys is not mentally-stable.. prison is not the answer for persons like her.. now I would believe that she knew she shouldn’t have taken that money but there should be some other form of making her paying restitution to that person but not prison time. She is a mental patient..
