ESTATE BOVONI, St Thomas, USVI- The [British] Virgin Islands flag is flying proudly in St Thomas, US Virgin Islands, thanks to a spectacular come-from-behind victory by Tortola horse Ghostinyou in the feature race of the St Thomas Carnival Races in the US Virgin Islands (USVI) moments ago, May 3, 2024.

Ghostinyou, owned by Lesmore Smith, hung back for most of the race at the Clinton E. Phipps Racetrack but found more than a second gear to stun the loud St Thomas crowd and capture the top purse of $40,000.00 in its debut race in the 1 mile and 70 yards race.

It was Protector; however, who took the early lead and led by 4 lengths at the halfway mark in an unofficial time of 44.2.

Protector maintained a solid lead, with Dixieland Union, Zaga, and Malibu Mandate in tow and then Ghostinyou and Thulean bringing up the rear.

Ghostinyou stuns the competition

Ghostingyou then made its move while exiting the back stretch and then sensationally took the lead at the top of the turn.

It was then plenty of daylight behind Ghostingyou and the other horses as they headed for the finish. Ghostinyou won by 7 lengths and in a time of 144.38.

Protector was second and Malibu Mandate third, followed by Zaga and Dixieland Union. Thulean did not finish the race after falling behind early.

Among those in the winner’s circle were USVI Governor Albert A. Bryan Jr, Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) and Minister for Communications and Works Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5).

More details to follow.

What t apace. I like the comradarie between the islands. Reminds me of the days of Aspecation. Now when are we going to get our track. It's a shame we have to wait so long. Just l look for another location and forget about that family and their drama. Tortolians deserve better than that.

That Jockey took a hell of a chance staying so far back until the home stretch. How he knew the horse had the stamina and speed? Happy lesmore won it. He is willing to keep the sport alive in the BVI but I wonder who else is willing and able. We lost two stalwarts in the sport to ignorant gun violence.
