Gerard St C. Farara QC being ‘actively recruited’ for political office
On the Honestly Speaking show aired Tuesday January 30, 2017 on ZBVI 780 AM, Mr Skelton-Cline, while thanking Mr Farara for hosting the show last week, said “I am actively recruiting Jerry Farara, I am going to do everything in my power, whatever influence that I have, that can be bought to bear because I believe he needs to be one of the persons that is any part of political leadership going forward.”
Mr Farara, who is a lawyer by profession and a member of the Inner Bar, was the guest host of the Honestly Speaking show last week, but has always been a public figure speaking out on different issues, especially those pertaining to good governance.
Though many have called for him to take up office before, Mr Farara had previous said he is not interested. Speaking as a guest on the show, Honestly Speaking with host Mr Claude O. Skelton-Cline on Tuesday December 19, 2017, Mr Farara when asked whether he would run for office said while he has been asked before to run he believes he can serve the Territory without being in elected office.
Right Skill Set
Mr Skelton- Cline has; however, not given up on urging Mr Farara to pursue political office and called for all who know Mr Farara to join in encouraging him. “Whoever knows Jerry, I want you to join the chorus with me and let’s see if we can get Jerry to step forward into another arena,” Skelton Cline said on his show yesterday, while thanking Mr Farara for his many contributions to the Territory as an attorney.
“He has the skills set, he has the wherewithal, and the way of thinking and talking through things analytically. I read some of the commentaries on the public meetings and all I can say was amen,” he explained.
Mr Farara was vocal on the issues of self-determination and independence in the past and most recently he shared his beliefs on the draft recovery document at the public consultation meeting on Wednesday January 25, 2018.
“As we look at our relationship with the UK and all of the legal imports et cetera, we want to to see him out there…and we are grateful for the work yet to be done through him. So I want you to help me recruit Jerry to be a part of whatever team going forward because he is very necessary,” Mr Skelton-Cline concluded.
Talk of potential political candidates for the next general election is rife with the next election constitutionally due in 2019 and, more so, the possibility of another snap election called by the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP), which is currently experiencing power struggles and infighting.

Should he enters the political arena money will not be his motive. He will champion the cause of the people. He will work towards political advancement. The British government will respect him because he is knowledge on many topics relating to the constitution. I am sure he will make a difference in debates in the House of Assembly.
People need to start taking politics and getting the BVI ahead seriously.

The government is being encouraged to implement an unemployment benefit program, which would assist many persons in the event of a major hurricane or unforeseen closure of a business.
The suggestion came from a resident during a recent community meeting. It was recommended that both the employer and the employee contribute to the program.
“So in the event of hurricanes or any event that the hotels try to shut down, from that benefit program employees can have whether $300, $500 or $1,000 every two weeks coming in. So that there is an income that they will have,” the resident said.
He noted that during this period, such a program would be of great help to many residents.
“Because I would suspect that there would be a lot of people who would be happy if they are making even $500 every two weeks now to provide an income. Are you (government) open to such a system?”
In response, Premier Hon. Dr. D. Orlando Smith said that the government has been doing a lot to support businesses to get back on their feet and be able to rehire or hire persons.
“In the area of business, we have given some grants to some businesses to get back on their feet. And, again, once businesses reestablish we want to encourage them to be able to employ more persons in the BVI,” Premier Smith said.
He continued, “In tourism, it is going take a little time before the major hotels get back on their feet, but there have been hotels and villas and other sources of accommodation for visitors which are beginning to operate, which would need assistance.”
The Finance Minister also mentioned the financial services sector, where 70 percent of the workforce are back on island.
“So as those people come back they will be reestablishing their offices and persons who used to work with them,” he stated.
Hon. Mark Vanterpool, Minister of Communications and Works said that he supports the idea of an unemployment benefit program
