Why does the government allow that area to be residential, why allow an apartment complex to be located in the middle of the highway? Buy the property from the owners!

it appears that you may not be living in the BVI that long, or if you were born in the BVI, not old enough to know. Until around 1996, the westward side of the highway was actually the sea, and when the land reclamation took place to facilitate the construction of the dual carriageway, the government of the day decided to enclose the delta/residential area with the land reclamation project. based on what I recall the original delta gas station to look like, and what the residential area looks like, I am willing to bet that the residential area came first, and delta came after. hope that clears this up.

It has, thank you for the history, but isn't it time to move that residential building from the middle of the highway? This all seems dangerous to the occupants, unsanitary, and I have to say absolutely Ghetto!

yes, I agree. but maybe the family cannot afford an alternative. in any event, thank God yesterday's explosion did not result in a worse reality. i cannot begin to imagine what would've happened if the nearby gas tanks at the gas station had caught a flame or even a spark.

Always bugs me the way some people haphazardly store their gas cylinders.

The land is owned by a BV Islander why would they sell it ? Further more they are collecting rent from poor people who can't do better than to live in a dump as you stated. Isn't that what most landlords do? When anyone complain about any issue to be fixed they are told to accept the condition or move out and when the renter do move the landlord are a bit of paint on the walls raise the rent and wait for another less fortunate family to move in then the cycle repeats itself. There is no one to complain too. To you it may look like a dump but it is the only thing that some people could afford. I am glad no one was hurt.

It is a dump yes however it is up to the landlord to make sure that the gas cylinders is properly hooked up. A disaster was averted today.

Even if it was a dog house, the landlord that is renting the dog house responsibility is to make sure everything is up to code. So you mean the landlord did not know the gas cylinder was inside the unit?

thay are not up to code, there are 8 people living in that dump and so you now see why the health care system system so overburdened. Why is a 70yr old woman not from here living here with 6 other people in the same unit, why should the BVI pick up the tab to educate 5 children when their parents do not make enough revenue to pay enough taxes to even house themselves properly . Hate me but its the truth

Yes lets punish the children for their parents' actions. How very Christian. Education is the only route out the poverty cycle for many families. If we cast aside the children they will just grow to repeat the same mistakes as their parents rather than use the education we can provide to better their lot and ultimately reduce burden on the BVI taxpayer.

The point remains, even of the house was there first and owned by a local, etc etc when the area was developed in the current fashion the govt could have offered a generous compensation or another attractive better placed lot of land to the owner and asked them to move. There would have been no loss of property or monies to the local and the area could have been better and more suitably utilized

That house needs to be demolished and the area cleaned up. It's an eyesore, not to mention it is ungodly to have humans living in that slum. The Government and Health Department could do something.

I feel you and I agree with you. Sad thing is, the owner can do better. Yes people need somewhere to live but not paying a arm and a leg to live deplorable. The amount of money the owner is making off those people is more than enough to fix up the property.TYPICAL SLUMLORD. OHHH, by the way, THE OWNER IS LOCAL, NEED I SAY MORE?

And where do you expect the people living there to go? Honestly your comment is stupid, insensitive and downright deplorable. Dump or not people live there and it's the responsibility of the landlord to make sure the place is hospitable for people to live there. People like you are a nuisance and just makes living on this hunk of rock unbearable

anyone should live in that state, living on the streets is not much different from living in such poor housing conditions. As a matter of fact 'the residents are literally living on the streets and highways'. It's time to find them a proper home and sell that property for commercial accommodations.

All landlord are the same da** thing, collect your money and does nothing to the apartments, is like you supposed to pay rent and still fixed their damn house.

For years I was wondering how people could live there right on the road with all of that noise, smog and dirt being blown in their faces. The land owner really should sell it and build a small suitable house somewhere else, so their tenants don't have to live like that. You should never put a propane tank under your sink, but sit it outside. Very lucky no one was injured because this was scary.

@Bumpy What would you like the Government and the Health Department to do? Relocate the occupants to living quarters more pleasing to your eyes? While the Government rebuilds the entire area like those compounds in Africa. Then move the occupants back into their new compound? Hmmmmmm......

But the whole house look like a fire trap. Just looking at it make you feel like you can’t breathe. At least put a fresh coat of paint on the outside.

Nuffa y’all on here bashing the aged building don’t realize that it successfully pass through Irma and Maria still intact unlike a lot of y’all ‘new’ house so please shut the hell up. This a free country. You want the man put a fresh coat a paint well go down to the paint shop across the road and buy it. Put your money where your mouth is or shut up. As for those who want buy the owner out because it next to delta… that building was there long before delta!! Let people own their property in peace. You would like a man walk up to you and deman your property just because it don’t look right on you or he could do a better job?! This is a democracy for crying out loud!!!!! Some people don’t think.

How can you possibly play the devil's advocate on such issues? The devil will always cause you to see his prospective, even if you and he are the only one in the world in agreement. Very evil/Ghetto mentality!

How is it a democracy when those tenants have been living on island for 15+ years and still don't have status?
