BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI – Lambasting persons who have been advocating for the boycott of Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) over a cartoon published on Monday, May 15, 2020, ‘Umoja’ radio show host Cromwell Smith aka ‘Edju Enka’ says their action is now putting freedom of speech under threat in the Virgin Islands.

“It is becoming apparent that we want to silence those persons who we don’t agree with. So if you say let's boycott VINO, let take away its business, then if you take away VINO’s business it will be another brother that we putting out of business,” Mr Smith said on the Wednesday, June 17, 2020, edition of his show.

Cartoon 'an accurate illustration'  -  Cromwell Smith

Sitting alongside guest Claude O. Skelton-Cline, Mr Smith said the cartoon accurately illustrated commentary made by Skelton-Cline about the relationship between the United Kingdom (UK) and the Virgin Islands (VI).

In the Tuesday, June 2020, episode of ‘Honestly Speaking’, Mr Skelton-Cline had told his listening audience, "every time the United Kingdom uses its cohesive powers, that's a knee on our collective neck. Every time the United Kingdom threatens us or gives us an ultimatum, that's a knee on our collective necks."

It was based on commentary by Claude O. Skelton-Cline that VINO made an illustration with both Skelton-Cline and Governor Augustus J.U. Jaspert in its weekly cartoons; however, the visual depiction has since sparked outrage in a small section of the VI community.

Freedom of speech under attack

"By making an illustration, which by all intents and purposes, an accurate illustration based on particularly what you described, how we come to the point where we want to put them out of business?" he questioned.

According to Mr Smith, the fact that people are now calling for the boycott of VINO represents a direct threat to freedom of speech, not just from an independent media perspective, but from his perspective as a talk show host and social commentator.

“Let’s just say for argument sake our livelihood depends on us talking, then we become afraid of what we are going to say that may benefit our people because we afraid, we might starve to death,” he said.

VINO ‘scatter me all over the Nile’ – Smith

“And VINO ain’t no fan of mine because they tear me into little bitty pieces and scatter my body all over the Nile,” Smith said.

Skelton-Cine added there is a significance in defending free speech, even it is perceived to be offensive.

“We must be able to defend, even that which offends us if we intend to live in a healthy democracy where freedom of speech and expression is one of the tenants that must be upheld,” he said.

Amidst the boycott calls, several businesses have so far indicated they will stand in solidarity with VINO and its right to freedom of expression by renewing advertising.

Skelton-Cline reiterated that those outrage by the cartoon should find better use of their time by targeting companies whose businesses are built on institutional racism and systemic racism, including slave labour.

When the cartoon characters was about our BLACK Government leaders, everyone was okay with that!! Now we have this one, and a lot of you upset. Something is seriously wrong with some people in this country. We better start asking ourselves what it is!! It needs to be addressed sooner than later. VINO is not the problem. SMFH

The colonialist among us even the ones born here are free to side with the Governor and free to leave the Virgin Islands as well. I support Cline and Smith and anybody else who are willing to put the VI first.

It's quite amusing to see this scarecrow syndrome going full circle. When it was Groove Gov'nor his computer was disabled from blogging so he could not defend himself. Now vino is under fire for the same reason that Groove Gov'nor was victimized for. This individualist mentality that Noel Lloyd bemoaned in Virgin Islanders is going to be our downfall. Whenever we hear something that doesn't fit into our circle of awareness we immediately jump into an aggressive posture instead of taking the time to do some research and find out for ourselves. We have been lied to big time..this is the mental part of the enslavement. Its silly to jump up like a TURKEY trying to contradict the TRUTH when it's presented. The ones that need to be boycotted are those who use their power and position to be a stumbling block to the peoples' struggle for freedom. Remember HISTORY will remember you for the disgraceful role that you have played.

Vino is the only one who gives up to date information as it happens, and follow up on their stories so we can be informed. If anyone has a problem with that, trying to keep us in the dark, I say you are the problem. We have cartoons about every problem with no one spared. Now, all of a sudden because it is about the governor, there's a problem? I say to you all with a problem, don't go on VINO anymore, because we have a right to see how everyone feels about every subject. We are a small family island who need to stand up for our right to say how we feel!!!!!!!!!

When the same Government Ministers who held up the Consumer Protection Act had businesses that still continued to affect the people/consumers and their doors were still opened....no boycott

There are many more whens with no boycott that are far more relevant. My people for God’s sake stop jumping on bandwagons just to say you are on one.

freedom of speach is absolutly essential and should NEVER be squashed...but by the very definition of free speach people...regardless of skin colour..ethnic background or indeed position on society should ve preventwd of voicing their opinion.
so if the govenor says he was offended...then surely that is his right...it is hypocritical to condem him for saying it just like it is hipocritical to say VINO should not have published it.
I dont agree with some of the chats which VINO alow theough their vetting process.....for instance...some months back someone wrote " we need ethnic cleansing here". that was very disturbing on many fronts..should vino have published it......i dont think so if they really do vet things......is it right to block someone from voicing their opinion......?......calling for ethnic cleansing i think steps over the boundary......but who has the right to make that decision.....
i read VINO daily...i get frustrated with the news...i get frustrated with some bias....but more to the point i get so frustrated by the hate comments that are alowd to be published because everyone ( me included) hide behind the veil of anonimity...giving us courage to say things that we may not say publically.
having said all of that....VINO.......keep reporting . your clarity of reporting i think excellent

Thank you VINO for calling out the Governor and his office.

They should be humiliated and resign.

Acting like our slave masters whipping us for speaking the truth!

Hypocrites who were silent at Floyds murder.

    Why no outcry then?!

Only at a cartoon saying the truth!! But not at Floyd murder?!

    That says it all.

Leave VI and whip UK your home instead.

I'm white. I was there in Bristol and the majority of us were white (because the majority of Bristolians are white) standing with our black friends. It's just a fact. You can say it doesn't matter and that our voices are not as important as our black friends but in the interest of fairness, you surely can see it for the truth it is.

A comon saying In the VI, is your mouth you can say what you want just stay away from me. I took that to mean, just that I can't tell you what to say and you can say as you please but leave me alone in my own space. We didn't need a law to tell us that your rights are yours with the understanding that my space is mines, don't deliberately come in my space if we can't get along and I don't have to be around you to hear your shit..but speak as you please.
