WEST END, Tortola, VI – Education is still regarded as the key to success and even though pockets are stretched during these challenging economic times some Good Samaritans are still making that effort to ensure that the youth are facilitated with the tools needed for a good education.

The West End Community Centre Committee, a non-profit organization which has been in existence for approximately 20 years now, has been popular in the West End communities for their annual Christmas parties and has now added a back-to school fair to its itinerary.

All that is required for school children from kindergarten to college is to show up at the back-to school fair at the Benjamin Romney Recreation Park, West End, on August 24, 2013.

The activity will be held from 2P.M. to 5 P.M.

The back-to-school fair is expected to be a fun filled event for all students residing in the areas of Towers, Romney’s Park, Spy Glass Hill, Zion Hill, Little Apple Bay, Long Bay, Belmont Park, Frenchman’s Cay and West End. “This is strictly for children of the areas that I have mentioned only. If a child does not come to the fair they would not get the back pack and supplies that we have for them because that would be defeating the purpose,” President of the West End Community Centre Committee, Mr Charles Benjamin told Virgin Islands News Online.

The students will be provided with a back pack and the necessary school supplies, including writing books, pens, pencils, crayons, rulers and hand sanitizers. “In addition, children ages 4 years and under will be getting special gifts.”

The Non-Governmental Organization is targeting approximately 200 children.

The activity will also include a motivational back-to-school message from a prominent person in the community. Other items to be featured at the fair will be performances from the Purple Dragon Karate Group and demonstrations by the Caribbean Thrill Pack basketball team from the US Virgin Islands.

“It’s going to be a day of lot of fun activities for the children. Admission is free, foods and beverages as well,” the NGO President stated.

In addition to its direct activities, Mr Benjamin said the committee is encouraging parents and children who may have uniforms and backpacks that are in good condition and not in use to take them to the fair for the organization to hand over to the Social Development Department.

The back-to-school fair is being supported extensively by the business community in West End, along with some other individuals who are not necessarily from that area.

Very good support in these hard economic times as we struggle to get our children educated. Consideration should be given to those college students in the area who are leaving this weekend to go back to college. With college fees rising continuously some students have had to go without some bare necessities in an attempt to meet financial costs.

Consideration to these students would be great. They need support also.

    Great job guys.
