BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI- Commentator and Pastor Mr Claude O. Skelton-Cline has advised Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) to form a commission to investigate and report on the Territory’s readiness for independence from the United Kingdom (UK).

The Premier continues to express his desire for an independent Virgin Islands (VI), moving away from being a British Overseas Territory.

Pastor Skelton-Cline on his weekly show, Honestly Speaking, on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, said he is in support of an independent VI. According to the man of the cloth, the record can show him as predicting independence for the territory will come by 2027.

Form a 12-month Commission; let people decide

The Pastor encouraged the Premier to form a commission, giving them 12 months to work, following which they should present a report to him.

“They’re going to study this whole thing on independence. They’re going to move throughout the Virgin Islands with multiplicity of meetings in every venue, in every church, in every centre, on social media platforms…gather for you all the information in every component that is necessary that a country will need to make an informed decision,” Pastor Skelton-Cline stated.

Following the commission’s report, the final decision on independence for the VI should be made by the people, Pastor Skelton-Cline further advised.

A referendum should then be held, he continued, to allow Virgin Islanders to “democratically” decide if they are prepared for independence.

“Bring it to the people,” Skelton-Cline stated.

The pastor's comments come as the UK remains reluctant to lift the controversial Order in Council that threatens to suspend the territory's constitution and impose direct rule.

Why do y'all keep pushing independence? Do you politicians and supporters realise that we are incapable of taking care of ourselves as a country?

    CORRUPTION!
    Roads and horrible infrastructure
    Education in shambles
    Crime/murders/drugs
    Terrible healthcare
    Reliance on imports
Use of US dollar (which will most likely be taken away if we go independent)
    Financial services will possibly decline
Tourism will dwindle because it's only then we won't take proper care of country
    No Army/Navy
Expats (who play a vital role in the economy) will probably leave and the entitled BVIslanders won't probably don't have much skill can't fill their shoes
No growth in country (no new hotels, tourist attractions, events to draw people)

Who will be head of country? The one we have now needs to be removed EXPEDITIOUSLY

    STOP PUSHING INDEPENDENCE!

Thank you for your comment. The only society that stands to gain from our dependence is the UK. As a territory still experiencing the strategic demise of imperialism, we really need to honest with and ask ourselves Who, How, What, When and Why? where the UK and its offspring around the world are concerned. If we really pay keen attention, dire situations are literally created to force a colonialized country to beg for their intervention or choose to remain dependent, not realizing that they are the puppet-masters when it comes to no law enforcement, regression in infrastructural development and the like. Yes, we do have corrupt leaders, just as in other parts of the world but their bribery came from where? Mek the UK ress we dung while we as a people force our leaders to a place of accountability and response ability. Ignorance can no longer be bliss VI!

The only thing that the UK taught us after Irma was that they were ready to pack our dead bodies into bags. Majority of the crew didn't have a clue as it related to rebuilding and needed local skills and guidance to get the job done. Talk dat!

those with the ability to vote will simply go to their relevant pulling stations and cast the Vote

Thereafter; based on the counting of yes or no ballots one will set about the mindset of the People

    The people have spoken

Then it will be easier for the UK and its allies to nuke you because of all the rotten things you have done to
outsiders who moved to the VI and were ripped off or robbed or otherwise violated by the VI government or
the citizens who like to do such things. The US won't do anything to you as long as you are a part of the UK.
A lot of government entities in the police part of things and have gotten away with all kinds of crap, as has
customs over-taxing imported household goods brought in by people moving to the VI. And of course some
private citizens have gotten away with crap. You keep implying that outsiders cause a lot of the crime, and yes
some sure do. But when its perpetuated on an outsider by 'insiders' , then that's ok. True the UK sits by
and does nothing, and God knows what motivates that government or the US. Not God, that's for sure.
But if you did separate from the UK, then you would be easier to identify as the culprit in many matters.
So please stop using the UK as a human shield. They're already guilty enough of crap. You both are.

Virgin Islanders as people elsewhere has a right to pursue self-determination, ie, free and voluntarily pursuit of a political status of their choosing. Nonetheless, Independence is not the only self-determination choice; other choices include integration, free association, etc. Moreover, the people must be given the opportunity through a referendum to choose a political status. The decision must be made by a majority of Virgin Islanders, not elected officials, etc. On 16 August 1995, the Virgin Islands’ sister OT and fellow non-self governing territory, Bermuda, held a referendum on Independence; of the 59% of voters who turned out, 74%voted against independence. Further, on November 05, 2024, Puerto Rico, another non-self government territory( US), and the oldest colony in the world, will hold a referendum on a) independence, b)US Statehood, and c) new form self-government. The jury is still out on the mostly likely outcome. Further, on 18 September 2014, Scotland, part of the Union of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, held a referendum on “Should Scotland be an independent country?”; 55.3% voted against independence.

Moreover, in regards to Virgin Islands holding a referendum on self-determination, independence should not be the only option; it should also in integration, free association, etc. Free Association can be a viable option. For example, the Cook Islands has free association status with New Zealand. Additionally, The Republic of the Marshall Islands(RMI), Federated State of Micronesia( FSM), and Republic of Palau have free association status with the US. What is free association?

The General Assembly: “ defining free association as a non-colonial political status. That includes the principle the FAS are sovereign nations with full rights of democratic self-determination and self-government.”

      E. Leonard, good read with examples and a consistent team of the people deciding what political status they want. This last issue is critical. The people must decide what status they want whether it is the status quo or something else. The VI needs to be given that opportunity sooner than later through a referendum...I agree that independence should not be the only option voters are asked to decide on. The Puerto Rico situation is an interesting one. I didn’t realize that Puerto Rico is one of the oldest colony. It has been under colonial rule for a long time. First, under Spain; from the late 19th Century, US..

FAS (Free Associated State) are sovereign states so what is the benefit of being free associated with a larger country? Does the benefits include defense, border protection, external affairs, economic development , etc? The British Empire was the largest empire in history encompassing colonies on every. Continent, ie, Antsrtica, Australia., Europe, Asia, Europe,, North America and South America. The British Empire comprise 25% of globe, yet not a single colony has been integrated into the UK or enjoy free Association with the UK. Nonetheless, having exploited countries of their resources until the resources were depleted, they sent colonies into independence with poor economies, poor infrastructure, poor corrupt institutions. poor health services, poor education, etc.

Some of us are deeply afflicted with the conditioning and dependency bug. We are free to leave the plantation but refuse to leaving, believing that the colonialists have our interests at heart. We are like dependent relatives who are afraid to leave home while disliking and protesting the house rules yet they stay. It is time to hoist the sovereignty, autonomy, freedom sail, set the compass to charge a new course. We need to be free external influence and control. We need self-governance, establishing the rules under which we are governed. Will self-governance come with some challenges? Yes. All independent countries didn’t go into independence with the wind at their backs ; they face some head winds but facing the head winds was better than staying on the plantation. Why do Virgin Islanders want to remain yoke to the past ? Do we not yearn to be free? Didn’t our forebears sacrifice so that we could be free? Are we going to let their sacrifices go in vain? Do we have no shame, no gratitude?

      E. Leonard, good read. Most of us think of self-determination as independence, but you showed there are other options. We can talk about this issue till we are blue in the face and nothing will happen. The spoken or written words are not as important as actions. Words must be converted into actions, if not, all we have is talk. Time for a referendum, plebiscite, etc on self-determination. However, the people must be educated on independence, integration, free association, status quo, etc. Time to launch a public education and outreach initiative on self-determination. Education briefings complete, schedule a referendum with several options, ie, status quo, independence, integration, free association, etc. Whatever happen to the referendum on same-sex marriage. Was that just words and no action. Politcians must have credibility; their words must mean something, if not they are just win bags.

As a resident who went through Irma, it was relieving to see the Royal Navy arrive within days of the traumatic storm. There didn’t seem to be any immediate stabilizing presence from Government officials here. And I wonder how it would be, as an Independent Country, dealing with another storm as devastating as Irma, Helene, Milton?

This should have been the goal of NDP at the last constitutional conference. Because we failed doesn't mean we can skip a grade get real and stop talking rubbish. To the best of my knowledge full internal self government comes with a set date for independence. @Order, the UN tasked the UK in 1946 as the ‘Administering Power’ for the VI to guide it towards a full measure of self -governance. The UK sees the VI as self-governing while deploying unilateral power over it, ie, reserve power , assent power, power to suspend its constitution, etc. The VI constitution is a dependency model constitution; the constitution granted to the VI and other OTs are a boiler plate and the UK will not give the VI what it wants it to have, not what the VI wants, maintaning full control. Is that full self-governance?

Our politicians turned the Royal Engineers and their equipment away to be able to give local truck men and himac men money from the Treasury to back kick. Go back in history the Royal Engineers built the roads that opened up East and West end to Town. Before that it was only accessible by sea. A loan guarantee was given to re-instate our broken infrastructure after Irma in a timely manner. We pissed on that and claimed all kinds of obeah was being worked on our democracy by the British.
