ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A new sports programme for schools has been launched in the Virgin Islands (VI) by the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth Affairs.

The Ministry is partnering with the BVI Football Association (BVIFA) and FIFA to launch the Football for Schools programme.

“This initiative aims to enhance Physical Education (PE) by formally incorporating soccer into the curriculum, fostering students' love for the sport, and promoting holistic development through athletics,” a press release on December 5, 2024, stated.

Specialised training for PE teachers

As part of the initiative, several Physical Education (PE) teachers underwent specialised training provided by the association’s coaching professionals and technical specialists. These teachers have earned their Class D Coaching Certification which equips the educators to deliver football instruction within their respective schools.

Football for Schools is currently being implemented at the Francis Lettsome Primary School, Leonora Delville Primary School, Bregado Flax Educational Centre - Primary Division, Alexandrina Maduro Primary School, and the Claudia Creque Educational Centre.

These schools will benefit from a support system, including access to resources, structured curriculum frameworks, and continued support for coaches.

“This collaboration represents a significant step forward in expanding PE programmes to encourage active lifestyles and cultivate and develop talent in football in the Virgin Islands,” the release stated.

The PE teachers lazy as hell. They only focus on a few sports. My child wanted to do archery so bad, but they force her todo track and other thins that she does not like, She is not the most athletically gifted, so she gave archery a try and liked it. We lose too many of our kids because the PE teachers crappy attitude towards other sports. What not work with the government to create after school and weekend programs. They just had elections at the Olympic committee. Why don't they put something like this in place? We are losing far too many children because of the nonchalant piss poor attitude of some of these teachers.
      Desperate for osme help
