Flax-Brutus heading BVITB for 3 more years
This is according to senior sources close to the Board, who told our newsroom that they have agreed to the renewal for another three years starting January 1, 2019, to December 31, 2021.
Ms Flax-Brutus, a Tourism sector veteran was first appointed Director in 2013.
The terms and conditions of her contract renewal are not yet known, however, some have claimed, it may have been an attempt to tie the hands of the new government.
Her Deputy Director is Rhodni A. Skelton, the son of former Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Ronnie W. Skelton (AL) who now heads a National Democratic Party (NDP) breakaway group called Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM).
Good track record
Over Ms Flax-Brutus’ tenure at the Tourist Board, she has done much to improve the Territory’s tourism product, advertise the Virgin Islands (VI) in new markets, and found ways to keep the Territory competitive, even as new emerging regional destinations like Cuba and Haiti, threatens the local industry.
She has also created the BVI Food Fete, the Staycation programme, along with the now famous Anegada Lobster Festival, all successful initiatives.
Despite her efforts, the NDP Government has not supported her by increasing the Tourism Board's Budget and they have only paid ‘lip service’ to the sector according to industry insiders.
