Fixing incinerator by 3rd quarter of 2024 a 'top priority' for Gov't– Premier
In a June 5, 2024 speech on World Environment Day, the Premier said, “The immediate concern of fixing the incinerator remains a top priority for delivery by the end of the third quarter this year. In the meantime, the Department has ramped up operations to minimise the risk of spontaneous fires at Pockwood Pond.”
The incinerator has been offline since February 2021, due to fire rendering the facility inoperable. Landfill fires have been frequent since, with residents of the First District being the most affected by the smoke and dust.
Premier Wheatley added that on the burning concern of waste management, the Department has increased the level of resourcing provided to the We Recycle programme which it supports through an MOU with Green VI where enhancing recycling is just one aspect of the comprehensive Waste Management Strategy approved in May for phased implementation.
Recently, a resident of the West End Community registered a desperate plea to the Government for an update regarding the Pockwood Pond incinerator and the continuous "toxic smoke" emanating from the facility.
Residents bemoan Pockwood Pond fires
In a Facebook post in the Real BVI Community Group on April 11, 2024, one resident called on the government, including Minister for Health and Social Development Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9) and Jr Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries, Dr the Hon Karl Dawson (R1) to bring a resolution to the woes faced by the people of the First District.
“West End residents continue to frequently endure poor air quality. Unfortunately, it seems only fires make the news. However, deadly smoke continues silently causing damage to our health at an immeasurable rate,” according to the Facebook post.
Other organisations like the BVI Cancer Society have spoken out against the burning, adding that it is resolute in its stance and has implored both current and future governments to take the situation seriously and act swiftly to alleviate the distress of fellow citizens.

Pure third world mentality
And we are still looking at the damage from the 2017 storm season every day.
BVI won't even put a heavy investment in solar energy despite our mostly sunny climate
but you bawling about climate change affecting us and need money to help strpz use the money that we have instead of squandering it
