ATLANTA, Georgia, USA- The United States of America’s former President Jimmy E. Carter Jr, a Democrat who was in office from 1977-1981, was the first President to visit the Virgin Islands (VI).

Mr Carter, who served as the 39th President of the United States and winner of the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize, died peacefully Sunday, December 29, 2024, at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his family. He was 100, the longest-lived President in U.S. history.

According to the Virgin Islands News Online media affiliate the New York Times, President Carter is survived by his children — Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Eleanor Rosalynn Carter.

Visited Tortola in 1985

In 1985, while the late Cyril B. Romney was Chief Minister (1983-1986), Mr Carter and his wife visited Tortola on a fishing trip.  First in St. Thomas, USVI, he was invited to Tortola by the late Chief Minister Romney who had a variety of regional and international political contacts.  Late President Carter also met former Chief Minister/Premier in 1985 the late Ralph T. O’Neal OBE and Reverend Edris Christopher-O’Neal, OBE.

Both deceased Carter and Romney went around the waters of the VI and caught some Mahi Mahi on a boat belonging to Mr Romney.

It is unclear if the VI will be represented at any official events when Mr. Carter is given a state funeral.
