First Librarian Of ESHS Honoured During Reading Is Fun Week
Mrs. Glasgow’s contributions to the growth and development of the Territory has spanned many years in various fields particularly education. She has served as the head teacher or principal of the Cane Garden Bay Primary, now the Ivan Dawson Primary School; the Carrot Bay Primary, now the Isabella Morris Primary School; the Capoons Bay Primary, now the Leonora Delville Primary School; the Road Town infant school, now the Enid Scatliffe Pre-Primary School and the Road Town school, now the Althea Scatliffe Primary School.
Mrs. Glasgow, in acceptance of the award from the Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn said, “It is indeed with gratitude that I accept this honour. I must thank the person or persons who thought of recognizing me. I appreciate the kind gesture and I say a heartfelt thank you. I thank God for all he has enabled me to do over the years.”
Mrs. Glasgow continued, “From an early age my parents told me whatever I do, do it to the best of my ability. Back then, when I entered the room that was designated for the library, all I saw were boxes piled up and you could imagine the amount of dust. I started unpacking the boxes. I cannot remember how long it took me to complete the task of emptying those boxes but I know it was done expeditiously and I was able to see a cleared room.”
“Students could then enter the room and use the library which was a reward for the work done to make the library useable,” she concluded.
In his contributions to the event, Minister Walwyn shared with the students the importance of reading and comprehension.
“More so than ever before, you will be challenged to be literate, and how to appropriately transfer the knowledge you have gained across subjects, in life, and eventually as you begin careers. The work that you put in today at Elmore Stoutt High School will significantly impact how successful you are tomorrow, once you leave the protective walls of this institution," he said.
The Education Minister continued, “What I want for each and every one of you is the same thing that your teachers and your parents want, for you to be successful at whatever it is you choose to do with your lives in the future. However, in order for you to be successful, we must ensure that your learning foundation is strong, and the strength for that foundation can only come through literacy.”
Reading is Fun Week is being celebrated in the Territory from October 14 – 20 under the theme, “Creating a Culture of Excellence through Literacy”
