First ever Hair & Beauty Expo rocks VI

Hair stylists and beauticians from fourteen salons competed before a packed and boisterous audience in the five categories - Braiding, Weave, Most Outrageous, Wedding and Cut and Colour – and pulled out all the stops to impress both the audience and judges.
Eclipse Hair Salon secured the Braiding category and tied for first place in the Cut and Colour category with Happy Heart Barbershop and Salon as A Cut Above Beauty Salon was the lone victor in the Weave category.
Nu Image Hair Salon won the Wedding category while another tie occurred in the Most Outrageous category with wins for Naturally You Hair Salon and Unique Touch Massage and Beauty Parlour.
The event showcased an amazing amount of creativity in hairstyles and fashion as models took to the runway in daring and breath-taking costumes that wowed the audience and kept the judges busy all night. There was also an amazing fashion show put on by the Sunshine GM store that complemented the hair competition.
International judges, Nicole Turnbull and Linda Bailey were unanimous that organisers Aymen Husein, Latoya Cotton and Nathan Wong produced a very successful show in the end.
“It was awesome, there was a great turnout and everyone there did an awesome job,” Bailey expressed. Participants were judged on originality, creativity and intricacy of the designs as well as the overall appearance hairstyles, according to Bailey and she stated that they were both very impressed by the themes and their execution.
Special performances also came from singers Kirk Adams and Miss World BVI Kirtis Kassandra Malone and the crowd was kept entertained on the turntables by DJ Dre.
Husein related that it was evident how much talent was in the Virgin Islands after witnessing the show. “We wanted something to show the talent that we have here,” he said while adding that through the friendly competition on stage persons were able to see much of that talent that existed.
He described the planning, which took some four months, as a long journey with a lot of sleepless nights but said in the end it was an amazing night.
Relating the concept behind the show, Wong said the idea was to promote local salons using non-traditional methods of marketing and he felt this was also an excellent way of showcasing local talent.
“We were hoping to have that many people but we really didn’t know how it was going to go,” Wong confessed about the nearly four hundred patrons that turned up to be entertained.
Several prizes were also distributed to members of the audience throughout the show and performances were done in a very tasteful and interactive manner with the hosts constantly involving the audience along the way.
Organisers plan to execute two shows each year – one each in December and July.
Mr Wong also expressed appreciation for the many sponsors that came aboard in support of the initiative.
