Finally! Gun Creek restrooms reopen
The restoration of the facility, which was reduced to frames following the hurricanes of September 2017, was the initiative of community minded residents.
NDP Neglected Gun Creek
Gun Creek port facilities are to North Sound as the Road Town jetty is to Tortola. However, while the National Democratic Party (NDP) administration had put much effort into having the Road Town Jetty and other port facilities around the territory back on track, the Gun Creek facility was forgotten and neglected.
Many were the cries of those using the port to have at least the toilet facilities in some order but the cries constantly fell on deaf ears. It was even the campaign cry of now Minister for Natural Resources, Labour and Immigration Honourable Vincent O. Wheatley (R9). He told this news site that processes are in train to have the entire port redone at the earliest possible time.
"The entire building is to be repaired and the port of entry restored, hopefully, shortly," said Honourable Wheatley.
Community effort
Nevertheless, a group of community minded persons led by Irvin Lennard and Akeem Lennard took on the challenge of having the toilet facilities back in operation. On April 29, 2019 the keys to the restored facility were hand over and the facility reopened for use by the public.
"I campaigned on the issue of the community working together with Government and I am so happy to see this happening in many areas," said Honourable Wheatley.
And being proud of what is achieved as communities come together, volunteer Akeem Lennard said, "This shows how a community of “busy” people can come together and volunteer our time and services to help get a well needed restroom facility that has been closed since September 2017, reopened, better than before."
Mr Lennard also expressed thanks to Greencrete BVI for providing counter tops for the restrooms.
