Fight over school bag lands Vincentian man in court
Quammie, 43, was found guilty of two counts of common assault against Julie Quammie and Peter Grey, one count of damaging property and one count of affray (being involved in a fight). The incidents allegedly occurred in September 2011.
Magistrate Richards said she was left ‘gasping’ during the defendant’s testimony and found his attorney, Mishka Jacobs’ contention that he was a credible witness and soft spoken to be contrary to what she observed.
At one point, Quammie quoted biblical scripture in responding to a question posed to him about how he felt about the issue. Quammie told the court, "For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten son." He then reportedly laughed. The defendant also asked the prosecutor whether she had kids when he was asked another question. Magistrate Richards had to intervene at this point.
According to court records, Quammie, a resident of Paraquita Bay, was involved in a fight with his wife (Julie Quammie) after going to their child’s school to take the child home.
The court heard that a tug of war ensued between the defendant and his wife over the child’s bag and this evolved into assault. Grey intervened and was also assaulted. The two then left to make a report at the East End Police station but were then followed by the defendant who confronted Grey in the police compound and challenged him to a fight and also threatened to chop off Grey’s head.
Grey reportedly picked up a weapon to defend himself and Quammie was dealt several blows. It was during this time that Grey's sunglasses were reportedly damaged.
The defendant contended during testimony that he was the one who was assaulted all along but the Magistrate ruled that this could not be the case as he was clearly the aggressor.
Jacobs, in mitigation, argued that there were no aggravating factors and there was no evidence that weapons were used in the act, or any evidence of a repeated assault on the VC. She further argued that there was also no evidence of pre-meditation and said the defendant was ‘caught in the moment of the situation’.
She requested a non-custodial sentence and suggested the defendant be fined for the offences while adding that Quammie was remorseful.
Quammie told the court that he respected the decision and had no intention of assaulting Julie and her companion. He added that his only intention was to collect his daughter and said the situation was unfortunate.
He will return to court on November 15, 2013 for sentencing.
