Festival bills to be paid in record time – Hon. Myron V. Walwyn
It was the occasion of the closing and award ceremony for the 2014 60th Jubilee Festival festivities held last night August 9, 2014 at the Iris Freeman Festiville, Road Town, Tortola.
According to Hon. Walwyn one of the difficulties they have had with Festival was that the monies allocated at times in the budget are normally not enough to run the Festival. “…and over the years we have been running behind with prizes and so on but I am reliably informed by Mr Blyden that, that wouldn’t happen at all this year,” said Hon. Walwyn.
This was further supported by Chairman of the BVI Festival and Fairs Committee (BVIF&FCC) Mr Marvin ‘MB’ Blyden who described Hon Walwyn as a ‘little Chihuahua’ (a small breed dog). “…and the Minister has been on my back like a little Chihuahua, hey Mr Blyden I want those payments, I want those payments,” said Mr Blyden.
He said that it is happy news that the BVIF&FC has set out a mandate to ensuring that everyone who worked for Festival gets their money. “Now all local vendors and everybody who worked for Festival once you have turned in your invoice, you will be paid,” Blyden said, adding that persons, only those who turned in honest invoices, can turn up at the Department of Culture’s building tomorrow Monday August 11, 2014 to collect their monies.
“Everybody who have worked and turned in an invoice and I am talking about an honest invoice,” he stressed.
All those who spoke at the closing and award ceremony said that in their assessment and those of others with whom they spoke, this year’s festivities were the best in many years. Hon Walwyn also said that one of their accomplishments with Mr Blyden at the helm of the Festival committee is the fact that they have managed over the years to cut costs.
“...and to give the kudos to the Chairman is the fact that we have been able to run Festival in a much more efficient way and a much more cost effective way and for every year for since I have been Minister the cost of Festival has reduced significantly and that is attributed to the leadership of Mr Blyden,” said Hon. Walwyn.
Booth owners who invested their monies and their time to be in the Festival Village during the period also came in for congratulations as well as the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF).
