Feb. 7: No six-day Tortola/Anegada Ferry service
Currently the Anegada route is still being plied by Road Town Fast Ferry which has a three-day schedule of Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Smith’s Ferry Service will be offering service for the three other days which are expected to be on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.
Calls to Smith’s Ferry Service indicate that the new service is yet to be finalised and can commence in another two weeks.
Up to publication time, efforts to reach the Premier, through the Director of Communications, for a comment on the matter was futile.
Meanwhile, speaking at a press conference on February 1, 2012 where the announcement was made, the Premier in justifying the decision, said the people of Anegada must be as connected to their capitol as are the people of the other major islands in the Virgin Islands. “They deserve to be and in any case, an increased service will have the intended benefit of stimulating the economy of Anegada by providing greater, continuous and affordable access to that island from the main island of Tortola, both for residents and tourists alike.”
The Premier also noted that Government will subsidise offsets on a predetermined formula to make the service viable in the short run “but we are hopeful that an increase in the use of the service by BVI residents will significantly reduce the level of the subsidy”.
This is the second announcement made at the press conference of February 1, 2012 that has not met its date of implementation.
The first was the new import duty policy which the Premier had said would have been effective on the same day of February 1, 2012, however, the further announcement has since revealed that it has to go the House of Assembly first and a set date for commencement is yet to be announced.
