Feathers & Flesh! Create costumes or stay on 'sidelines' & complain– Premier Wheatley
The Premier laid down the gauntlet during an August 24, 2023, press conference on the VI's 69th Emancipation Celebration review, while referencing comments made by former legislator Eileene L. Parsons, OBE who has shared a displeasure that the VI parade has evolved into ‘Feathers & Flesh’ like other regional parades.
Society has changed - Premier
“Early on in the 70s, because of course it was just us, we did our celebrations in a particular way. Now, of course, we've transitioned into something different because our society has changed. What I would like to see us be more of going forward is really to be intentional about who we want to be as a people,” Premier Wheatley said.
Dr Wheatley added that it is for the people to decide where they want to go and who they want to be.
“So we have to have a conversation about our society, we have to grow. And you grow through having conversations, you go through as a result of those conversations. Taking action is something that we can't be passive about. We have to be active participants in what we want to see and what we want to do,” he added.
He said in the case of the ‘feathers and flesh’ comment, hundreds of young women and men embraced the type of costumes people have been critical of.
Go out there & do a costume - Premier
“And the persons who have a challenge with it, did you have an equal number of persons who embrace what it is that they wanted to see? Come for the 70th, are you challenging yourself that you're going to go out there and do a costume in the way that you think it should be done?” he questioned.
He added, “And if you're not willing to do that and you're only willing to stay on the sidelines and complain about it, well, you know it will be what it will be.”
Ms Parsons, speaking on the July 30, 2023, edition of Real Talk with Karia J. Christopher, said: “Years ago, a reporter in Trinidad writing in a Trinidad newspaper, say Trinidad Carnival had become nothing but feathers and flesh. This was a Trinidad reporter… Trinidad Carnival has become nothing but feathers and flesh. This is what has happened to us,” she said.
Premier Wheatley reiterated that the way forward is for the VI as a collective to decide on who they want to be.

m is not with the custumes, it's with the vulgar bebehaviour, no one should be on the ground doing the 69, that's to far !
I already say no number of degrees could give someone integrity, class, or COMMON SENSE!!!
This is the same Premier that was up in Long Look Church after the fiasco with the former Premier saying he going do right by God.
He is nothing but a mouth champion.
Ezekiel 16:43 “Because you have not remembered the days of your youth but have enraged Me by all these things, behold, I in turn will bring your conduct down on your own head,” declares the Lord God, “so that you will not commit this lewdness on top of all your other abominations.”
If he is comfortable with those costumes it says alot about who he is.

Not what to do to get it even better is to separate the children from the adults and have theirs the saturaday before up by the collage grounds and have a soca monarch for them and leave the mondsy for the adults with a longer journey and you see it gets better because we adults can't enjoy ourselves with children amongst us so changes we need
