ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The family of the late Dariel George made a financial contribution to the BVI Cancer Society in her honour.

Ms Cheryl George has been supporting the Cancer Society and its work, however, the role the society plays in the lives of those diagnosed with cancer became a reality for her when her sister Dariel was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018.

When Dariel lost her battle with breast cancer on October 2, 2024, the family decided to use her death as a means of supporting the cancer society even more.

Cash in lieu of flowers

Following the passing of the their sister, Dariel George’s family adopted the position of requesting cash instead of flowers to help offset medical and other expenses for persons who were battling cancer.

"I requested at her funeral in lieu of flowers we collect an offering towards the BVI Breast Cancer Society and the Long Look Methodist Church Building Fund."

Her sister she explained was a member of the Methodist Church saying, "I strongly believe and support the fact that we as a community need to start to donate towards these organizations to help others who are battling with illnesses."

She added flowers do not carry much value following someone’s passing reciting the common phrase, “Give me my flowers while I am living, and let me enjoy them while I can”.

At the funeral service, cash offerings were collected and from the donations collected, Ms George presented the BVI Cancer Society with $1000.00.

"I have been a loyal supporter of the BVI Cancer Society over the years and I feel extremely happy to donate this $1,000.00 on behalf of my family."
