Fahie performs from both mound & plate for Lady Bears!

Although suffering 3 defeats in their last four games, Sheniqua "Bam Bam" Fahie and the Lady Bears of Shaw University can look at some good individual performances to gain confidence for the rest of the season. Photo: Charlie E. Jackson/VINO

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Despite some solid pitching and some even more solid batting, Sheniqua “Bam Bam” Fahie could do little to stop the Shaw University softball team suffering 3 defeats from four matches ahead of today’s (April 7, 2013) clash with Winston-Salem State.

Fahie had 2 hits from 3 at bats in the 2-0 game 1 victory over Fayetteville yesterday, April 6, 2013 including a single to right field that loaded the bases.

The Lady Bears scored both their runs in the top of the third. With one out, two Lady Bears collected walks and Sheniqua Fahie loaded the bases with a single to right field. Gina Yozzo then walked, forcing Shanice Anderson home.  After the second out was recorded, Kemesha Braithewaite walked, driving in another run as Cortnee Kelly crossed the plate.

Taylor Moore and Keyunna White combined for a two-hit pitching effort as the Shaw claimed a 2-0 victory against Fayetteville State in the first game of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader. The Lady Broncos responded with a 7-2 win in the second game.

After White loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the third, Moore came in relief and got two quick outs to keep the Lady Broncos off the scoreboard. She would give up only one hit the rest of the way, giving the Lady Bears the win.

In the second game, the Lady Broncos broke on top with two runs in the bottom of the first, and then added a single run in both the second and third innings before Shaw got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth.

With one out, Fahie tripled to right field, and then scored on Yozzo's double to left center. Renee Holmes' sacrifice moved Yozzo to third, and she scored when Braithewaite singled through the left side of the infield.

The Lady Broncos answered with another two in the bottom of the fourth, stretching the lead back to four runs at 6-2. They would add another run in the bottom of the sixth for the 7-2 final.

Fahie took over at the mound from Taylor Moore in the 3rd inning, pitching for the remainder of the game allowed 7 hits and gave up 4 runs; she threw base on balls twice and struck out just one of 23 batters she faced.

With the bat, she finished with one hit, one run scored and the triple from 3 at bats.

Just two days earlier, “Bam Bam” had to take a big 5-2 defeat against Johnson C Smith University, pitching for 7 innings, giving up the 5 runs from 7 hits. She threw to base on balls and struck out 2 of the 31 batters she came up against.

She fared better when it was her turn to bat with a hit, 1 run and 1 RBI from 3 at bats. She also singled and unleashed one of those irrestibable “bunts” that domestic pitchers here in the VI know so well.

The win actually gave Johnson C. Smith back to back victories as in game 1 they had beaten the Bears 7-5. Fahie relieved Moore in the 4th inning although she had just 2 hits with no addition to the score. However, all 7 runs had been scored and the damage done.

Fahie finished facing 15 batters and walking 5 of them and struck out none.

Fahie scored for Shaw in the bottom of the 4th and added a triple and 1 RBI to her 3 at bats.

This is the best reporting VINO ever had!!! Good to hear about some positive in softball -- BVI Softball Players doing their thing off island. Hope to see locals support them on the field when they come home to play .. with or without lights .. if you love the sport and support your own you'll be there

Congratulations Sheniqua on your performances....just an observation about local softball....why isn't the association taking charge and playing? Is it because there are no lights means that they have to kill the sport? Is the league only catering to older players?

What happened to the youth program that was started a few years back?

More of our young players need to be playing to have opportunities like Sheniqua....c'mon Softball Association....I see matches in Sea Cows Bay to keep people active...can't something be done despite the not having lights?
