ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Sheniqua “Bam-Bam” Fahie and the Shaw University softball team came back to defeat Edward Waters College in both games of a double header before heading to the CIAA Roundup and coming home with a 1-2 record when games were contested last weekend and mid-week.

In their first game of the afternoon, the Lady Bears won by a score of 13-10.  In the second game, they defeated Edward Waters 12-4 in a five-inning contest that was shortened by the mercy rule.

In the first game, the Lady Bears scored 13 runs off 17 hits. Shaw was led by Sheniqua Fahie, Shanice Anderson and Renee Holmes who each scored three runs. Those three, along with Erica Lafrades,  led the team with three hits apiece as well.

Shaw used a five-run fifth innings to eventually pull away and take the victory.

The Lady Bears started the bottom of the second innings down 0-8 until Shanice Anderson singled and stole second, third and home to give Shaw its first run.

After a slow start, in the first two innings, Lafrades singled to get on base in the third. Sheniqua Fahie homered, bringing Lafrades home and scoring two runs.  In the bottom of the fifth, the Lady Bears scored five runs off seven hits. Courtnee Kelly led off with a single to left center. Fahie followed and singled through the right side advancing Kelly to second. Anderson singled up the middle for one RBI, bringing Kelly home and advancing Fahie to third.

Anderson managed to steal second before Homes singled up the middle for two RBI. This hit brought home both Anderson and Fahie.

At the top of the sixth, the Tigers were unable to answer the Lady Bears. With the score still 10-9, the Lady Bears brought the heat in the bottom of the sixth, scoring their last three runs in game one. Fahie and Anderson both singled to get on base. Holmes walked to load the bases. A two-RBI single up the middle by Taylor Moore brought home Anderson and Fahie, while advancing Holmes to second.

The Shaw softball team then split a pair of games at the CIAA cluster two roundup held at Ridgecroft High School in Ahoskie, NC’ dropping the first game to Virginia State 11-3 and rebounding against Elizabeth City State for an 11-4 victory.

In the first game, the Lady Bears saw very little action, but in the second game, it was all Shaw as the Lady Bears took advantage of two Lady Vikings errors and combined them with 5 hits to grab a 11-4 win over Elizabeth City State University.

Shaw broke on top early, taking a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first, with five runs scored on one hit and two errors including an unearned effort from Fahie.

On an error of the second baseman, Fahie was able to reach base, advancing a runner to third and scoring Anderson an unearned run. Fahie was able to steal second base on a passed ball and advanced to third when Gina Yozzo ground out to the pitcher. She then scored an unearned run on another passed ball.

In the second inning “Bam-Bam” was walked to first and then advanced to second on a wild pitch before being left stranded.

Fahie came in to pitch in relief of Danielle Archibald and blanked the Lady Vikings in two innings of work, striking out two.

In the last match of the CIAA Roundups, Shaw struggled at the plate but battled hard- falling to Chowan 8-7 in extra innings on the Hawks Field at Chowan University in Murfreesboro, NC Sunday morning.

The Lady Bears found it difficult to get any hits in five innings of the eight-innings game, but still managed to keep it a close game against the Hawks.

The Lady Bears finally plated two runs in the top of the third when a two RBI double to left center by Sheniqua Fahie scored both runners.
