Expect no special treatment from Hon. Pickering!

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – “If you know somebody, who knows somebody, who knows somebody you were getting a work permit exemption…it was a big problem that I have faced as Minister, that is why I had to stop that,” revealed Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Dr. Kedrick Pickering at a labour meeting held last evening February 7, 2012 at the Abraham Leonard Community Centre in Carrot Bay.

At the moment, all exemptions are being scrutinized by Dr. Pickering – a move that has received mixed reaction from the community.

However, the Labour Minister told residents that the Labour Department has stringent guidelines for giving out work permit exemptions but unfortunately during the last couple of years that system “seem to have fallen apart.”

He admitted that since entering office the mentality of some who voted for him expect special favours, and firmly stated that he will not compromise the integrity of the department.

“I get my own licks because my own people who expect favours from me because they vote for me expect me to give them work exemptions for their girlfriends, boyfriends or maid or something like that. I say I can’t do that! We have a system in place where our country is going to function where everybody is going to understand that there is justice and fairness,” Hon. Pickering stated.

He said it gets him upset when people go behind “someone’s back to get the exemption.”

The Minister added, “If someone come to me and say they applied and have not heard back anything that is the Labour Department’s responsibility!”

This is an admirable principled position. But the reality is that the political culture in the BVI is riped with patronage. BVi politics is a quid pro quo process. Doc is outfront on a limb on this issue so time will tell how committed he is. That said I'm on board with his principled and courageous stand on issues that Virgin Islanders care about. He is showing strong leadership. The only is have with him is handling of the former Labour Commissioner. He should have set expectations for her and if she did not measured up then can her. But everyone is entitled to a mistake. In any event stay strong, focus and humbled. Keep fighting for Virgin Islander interest.

For Rent For Rent For Rent. More and More And more signs all over, WHY well expats are going back home as most of the BVI landers spend many years asking for, Well this is the moment many are going home tire without money and finaly some Residents are happy about, the bad part is that when they go back home many apartments are now been empty and the bank keeps calling for their money. Well Im happy that Dr. P is pushing hard to get more expath out and Keep doing such a good job for the local Economy Yeshhhhhhhh
