EXCLUSIVE: VI’s Keita D. Cline to be inducted into Hall of Fame
The proud product of the Virgin Islands (VI) in the person of Mr Cline is slated to be among others who will be the spotlight of the Hall of Fame at a ceremony in the DQ Club Room at TCF Bank Stadium on at 6:00PM today; professionally he is the Regional Vice President at Prudential Financial, USA.
Speaking with Virgin Islands news online from his USA home Mr Cline said that he was most surprised at when he was informed of his being selected to be inducted into the hall of fame. “It is more than an honour for me and to know that I would have graduated from that university [nearly] 20 years ago, in 1996 and to be recognized to this day it’s a real honour,” said Cline.
He told this news site that he credits the discipline, morals and values instilled in him as a Caribbean boy. Cline says while how would have missed out on coming home to celebrate with his folks of the recent 60th Anniversary of Festival, plans are in the making for him being home for the Christmas season, a time he will savour celebrating his most international achievement.
Cline was an exceptional long-jumper and triple-jumper for the Gophers from 1992-1995, winning five Big Ten championships in those events. As a senior in 1995, Cline won both the Big Ten indoor and outdoor long jump title as well as the indoor triple jump, his third championship in the event in four years. Cline was a two-time All-American at Minnesota before competing for the Virgin Islands at both the 1996 and 2000 Summer Olympics.
The All-American still holds four school records at the University of Minnesota – the indoor triple jump (16.16 meters, 53-00.25 ft.), the indoor long jump (7.97 meters, 26-01.75 ft.), the outdoor triple jump (16.18 meters, 53-01 ft.) and the outdoor long jump (8.12 meters, 26-07.75 ft.).
One of 13 members of this year’s Hall of Fame class, Cline is joined by Laura Halldorson, Quincy Lewis, Tanya Schuh, Bernie Zeruhn, Bill Light, Pat Micheletti, Kari Blank, George Tuck, Frank McCormick and Bob Hanning. With the addition of 13 new inductees in this year’s class, the “M” Club Hall of Fame now has 319 members representing student-athletes from 27 different varsity sports, as well as coaches and administrators.
