ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Winner of X Factor USA 2011 Melanie Ann Amaro will be in the Virgin Islands this week and will be making a number of appearances in this year’s Police Week events, talking to youth about various issues ranging from bullying to safety on the roads.

Born in Florida, USA to Virgin Islander parents but spent her younger days in the Virgin Islands, Melanie Amaro is to arrive in the territory on March 25 and later that evening she is scheduled to appear at the celebrated Police Week International Food and Drinks of the Islands and Karaoke Night. Celebrations for Police Week got underway yesterday March 22, 2015 with a Church Service at the Sanctuary of Hope, New Testament Church of God in Virgin Gorda under the slogan ‘Empowering our communities through Police Partnerships.’

Advice to young people

This news site contacted Amaro, who is currently in the United States, and during an exclusive interview she gave a brief overview of what some of her expectations are.

“I will be speaking on certain safety protocols to young people like the importance of when you’re riding on your scooters the importance of wearing a helmet and will be touching on gun control…like if you see a gun, or if you ever come close to one make sure to let an adult know so that they can contact the Police Station; certain safety protocols to make young people aware or their surroundings and different things like that,” she said.

“As far as younger children go I would tell them that if they keep on working hard and do what they have to do then they can be what they want to be. They just have to keep their mind focused on what they have to do and keep pushing, because many times there have been times when I thought I could not do something and I wanted to give up but I realised that if it is something that I want it is not going to come easy and it is going to take a lot of work so I just decided to keep working and pushing for my goal…doing my stuff with my music and whatnot,” she said.

Life after X-Factor 2011

The inaugural X-Factor USA winner said that since winning the event in 2011, she was able to do quite a bit of travelling. “I have made tons of music and met lots of fans and people who really enjoyed my music and my singing and whatnot. It has certainly been a life-changing experience for me because I feel as though if I didn’t do X-Factor I wouldn’t have gotten as far as I have. I have still accomplished my dream of course because that is how God had it planned for me,” she said.

Melanie said that she has done some acting and some stage plays following her accomplishment at X-Factor.

“I have had a chance to speak with Tyler Perry and heard what he had to say about my singing. He had nothing but positive things to say so I am happy about that. I also got the chance to meet tons and tons of celebrities, people in my wildest dreams I didn’t think I would have met, but I have had a chance to meet them and sit and talk and mingle with them. Being able to call them my peers and friends is definitely something great and I am very fortunate and blessed to be able to call them my peers,” she said.

What's next?

As for what is next for her, Melane said she has been in the studio trying to find herself musically in terms of what genre is most suited for her. “I am just trying to see what suits me best because as an artist I am still trying to find myself. I know the music that I want to do but with all the different types or genres out there it is best for me to [try] everything. But for now I hope to be doing some acting on television and on stage etc,” she said.

Melanie added that she has had a couple of auditions that went very well. “I was talking with Disney about doing a voice over role with them for a new [animated] movie that they have coming out so I am excited about that,” she said.

Asked whether she is looking forward to her visit to the Virgin Islands, Melanie Amaro said, “I am so excited. Every time I come back home it is the best feeling…I love being back home because of the love that I receive from everyone…just seeing a familiar face. I really am excited and I can’t wait to arrive and to see everyone and to speak with the younger children about safety protocols,” she said.

Sponsoring Melanie Amaro’s visit for the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) is JML DeliverIT and its owner Roxie Romney who welcomed the idea of joining with the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force in encouraging young people to dream big.

Keep hiding behind blogs and spitting out comments to contribute to division and hate. I hope you look better, feel better and have a better life because of this. In short, if you have nothing good to say shut the hell up because your words are no use and only promotes your agenda that no one cares about.

I understand what you're trying to say, but you could have done so without any form of hate. I am very well aware that the majority of our community do not welcome persons, even who are born here and have ancestors from other countries, especially our neighboring Caribbean islands. If you have a common BVI last name, then no matter who you are, nobody discredits you. If persons were born here, but their names are not from among us, then we tear that person down, especially if they do something that's not positive, like being charged with a crime etc. My heart goes out to those who are affected by the British Nationality Act, where if they were born here (or any OTC), if their parents are on work permit had does not have Belonger or Residence, then the child is not a Belonger. That isn't fair, but that's how it is. I would bet though, if Melanie had done something not worthy of being associated with the BVI, the blogs would have torn her to pieces, and I read between the lines, that the initial comment by the blogger wanted to put the comment in that light. I am a mother, and I don't care who you are, or where you come from, I wish every young person the very, very best in whatever they set out to do. I wish Miss Amaro well, and I trust that the young people who she meet with, would take away something positive from what she would say to them.

Your comment is very refreshing to read. I am encouraged that there are still people in the BVI who are willing to take the time to share their knowledge about matters in a kind and loving way. The issue is the British Nationality Act and some times life is not fair but... the earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof and when people do well, especially those we know, we should celebrate and support them as appropriate no matter who they are or where they were born. When they do not do well, we should still support and encourage them as best we could no matter where there are from or where they were born. Words have life, whether spoken or written and we should always be careful (as a work in progress) how we use our words.

I agree with the above and understand fully what Hmm said. From reading, the person does not hate Melanie but is simply pointing out that if you are not from the BVI then you are not welcome & those that are not from here but does something recognizable e.g Melanie, the BVI ppl will hype up just because it’s making Tortola look good.
Hmm, some people just can’t read between the lines!

I used to like her until she allegedly tweeted that "Tortola has the worst customer service." All the positive attention she may have brought the territory was erased with those words.

@blah, you call a spade by its name, and sorry if the truth hurts. Yes, customer service here in most areas is awful. Yes also, there are a handful of people who we must give thumbs up to, but do a personal check, and if you know anything about Customer relations, you will rate this place with a negative number. Learn to take criticism and then learn how to correct it.
