ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Work on constructing a new building to house the Eslyn Henley Richiez Learning Centre is moving apace.

The new facility is being constructed directly behind of the now demolished Althea Scatliffe Primary School on the compound of the Magistrate’s Court, following Cabinet’s decision for the land swap to take place.

The contract signed by the Recovery and Development Agency (RDA) on August 25, 2023, on behalf of the Government of the Virgin Islands was awarded to Autland Heavy Equipment Co. Ltd. in the amount of three million, nine hundred and fifty-nine thousand, six hundred and ninety dollars and fifteen cents (3,959,690.15).

The RDA reported on November 14, 2023, that excavation works are now completed on the Eslyn Henley Richiez Learning Centre project site.

“Autland Heavy Equipment Co. Ltd has gotten off to a great start despite recent rainy weather conditions experienced here in the Territory,” RDA stated and added that now that excavation works are complete, the next step is concrete blinding.

Minister for Education, Sports and Youth Affairs Hon Sharie B. de Castro had said the new school will provide an education that is inclusive, empowering, and aligned with the Territory’s mandate to educate all children.

“Education is a universal right and we firmly believe that every child, regardless of their abilities, or disability deserves an education that is tailored to their individual needs,” Hon de Castro had said.

The Eslyn Henley Richiez Learning Centre was destroyed by Hurricane Irma in September 2017.

The students and teachers were initially relocated to Althea Scatliffe Primary School but are now housed at Valerie O. Thomas Community Centre in Sea Cows Bay.

Another hundred step backwards for students who are differently abled, integration was and is the best way, soon they will be going back into isolation, a dark and shameful stigma the BVI hides. Sad!
