Ex-Premier Fahie pleads ‘not guilty’ to US drug, money laundering charges
Hon Fahie was ousted as premier earlier this month after the US Department of Justice said he had agreed with a Drug Enforcement Administration informant to help smuggle cocaine in exchange for a cut of the proceeds leading to his arrest in Miami.
Governor John J. Rankin, on April 28, 2022, announced that Mr Fahie had been detained in Miami by the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA)
The Department of Justice also arrested and charged Oleanvine Pickering-Maynard, who had been the Managing Director for the BVI Ports Authority, with the same crimes as Fahie.
$1M bail set
A Miami federal judge on Monday, May 23, 2022, rejected a prosecutor’s bid to detain former Premier Fahie, but before he can be released from a federal lock-up on a new $1 million bond, he must prove to the judge that the money for his bail comes from a legitimate source.
Reuters reported that his Attorney Theresa Van Vliet, when consulted, said Fahie has already pleaded not guilty.
US District Judge Kathleen Williams ruled as a condition of Fahie’s bail he must wear a GPS device so he can be monitored and that his defense attorney can only visit him at his daughters’ home in southwest Miami-Dade County.
His daughters and wife also have to surrender their passports.
