Everywhere I turn is like I have a shadow behind of me – Walwyn
His statement particularly drew the attention of 1st District Representative Hon. Andrew Fahie, who asked if someone needed to be elected to be included as a speaker on a programme.
“Madam Speaker, since we talking about programmes and getting on programmes, I remember on the campaign, I don’t know if it was me, that talk bring talk. Madam Speaker I can recall coming in to this office, my very first press conference Madam Speaker, I asked for the itinerary so I could see who speaking- on the itinerary Madam Speaker, would you believe it had somebody speaking there who was not elected, who lost the elections, was on that programme to speak in a Government capacity?” Walwyn told the House of Assembly.
Hon. Walwyn also made reference to an event in the 8th District, where he alleged that a non-elected member, was included on a programme to speak. “It looks to me that Madam Speaker, that some people don’t remember that November 7 happened and so they don’t have respect for the people.”
He said he admired the former opposition members because they allowed the Government to do its work.
At this point Former Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Andrew Fahie said he was concerned about Minister Walwyn’s statement. “If they were on the programme, Madam Speaker, are we saying that in this country that unless you elected you cannot be on a programme to speak, even if you lost an election? Because this is the tenor in which I hear coming out, Madam Speaker, I don’t believe we reach to this point in our country. I want the Minister to clear that up for me to make sure that he is not saying that.”
Hon. Walwyn said he was not saying that. “The person contributed from the Government caucus, lost the elections, and ended up on the programme. ...the point I am making, Madam Speaker, is that we are getting trip up and my legs are long. Everywhere I turn is like I have a shadow behind of me. I had to check the itinerary before somebody sneak themselves on to it.”
The argument was then broken up by the Speaker of the House as the members began responding to each other.
