ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Frequent brawls among students of Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) this week, including at least three incidents of fights on Thursday, May 2, 2024, have resulted in a decision to switch to learning via online platforms today, Friday, May 3, 2024.

Our News Centre was told that frequent brawls among students have been occurring since last week.

Teacher assaulted by group of students

On Tuesday, April 30, 2024, however, a male teacher was assaulted by a group of male students in the school’s parking lot.

According to reports, the teacher was attacked when he was still in his vehicle. The attack continued when he exited his vehicle but was saved from serious injuries by other students.

It is unclear if anyone has been arrested or charged.

School's remote learning plan activated

The Ministry of Education announced on Thursday that, in response to incidents of extreme misconduct that occurred on campus this week, the Ministry, in consultation with the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force, has taken a decision to activate the school's remote learning plan on Friday, May 3, 2024.

“After consultation, it was deemed necessary to implement this measure as our primary concern is the safety and well-being of our students, faculty and staff. By transitioning to remote learning on Friday 3rd May, we aim to provide a secure environment for all while facilitating the ongoing investigation by the police,” the letter to parents stated.

The Ministry said it will provide regular updates as the “situation unfolds” and endeavoured to keep parents informed of any developments.

While students have to stay home today, teachers; however, have been mandated to show up for school.

Hire x convicts as security, not only as tough folks but folks who can share their experience as a result of bad bad behaviours and bad decisions. Also the sadness of prison life..

    Expel those involved. Case Closed.

Everyone deserves an opportunity to explain their situation. This is what has been going on all along. Oh, the students are animals, they have no home training, get them out of the system. Let those who want to learn be free to do so. Does anyone want to find out why the student acted out? That is why the prison will always be full. Stop, try to get to the root cause before you shout, ‘suspend them, expel them, lock them up’. Have we not learned anything? Crucify him, crucify him! Denying a child an education will not fix anything. We are doomed if those in charge continue to be fearful and ignorant to the needs of our children.

I hope that teacher presses charges and those students are put in jail. Make them a lesson for the rest. Absolute madness.

This makes sense? The administration is incompetent. Fix the flipping problem and let the children stop being set back. Get rid of Garraway, Penn Rogers, and Veciil Hodge who wants to be the students friends. And the security is NOT trained.

The rules at that school are outrageous. The security officers are not allowed to use force. The teachers are not allowed to use force and the students know that they can do what they want and get away with it. No rules just like the society they are in. Minister of education is a joke.

It's not just the school, it is the whole place. Look around, the place has become a mess from top to bottom. People turn a blind eye to the crime, roads, garbage, corruption. Everywhere is overgrown. A third world country, with a third world government, education, policing and local population

Should they not have contingency plan for this? wait was the entire school fighting? this is VERY POOR leadership, they keep punishing the ones who are there to learn instead of dealing with the problematic ones. ESHS may be need of new leadership

What happen to the minimum wage / proper living wage she promised. She is a joke a clown. How can you get good and trained security at minimum wage...I kept saying minimum wage should different base on profession..Security Guard should be getting no less that $13.00 per hr. Then you get the best well trained..Also change the Law to give them detaining
powers..Build a detention holding cell at the school to hold them until the police and or parents come to get them..

Security there are not trained. They don't know what they are doing. You look at the videos of fights and you see them taking their time to respond to a fight, if you see them show up in the video at all. They moved the blue shirt team from security for some old people and they don't move at all. So, let them get serious about security. Penn Rogers and Hodge say they don't want no police on their compound. So, things will never get better. Stopping school every second for online school that never working properly is their answer. Welcome to the BVI.

All we do is promote partying, drinking. violent artist, dry humping songs etc when it comes to our bvi lifestyle. So when the next generation see that and get involved we wonder why them behaving so.

The youths need good role models

the youths need goals and a future to look to

the youths need to be thought morals

the youths need hands on hobbies/ afterschool activities

Violence and certain songs/artist should be frown upon and chastised

too many youths glorify gangs, sex, drugs etc. Look at how they are dressed. looked at the songs they listen too. look at the company they keep. look at who your daughters are around. watch those kia souls. watch those scooters. watch those gucci/nugget chains those are red flags around ur child!

parenmts, goverment, teachers, community all needs to play a role

My my, when leadership announces that the answer to violence and gun crimes is more sports, what can we expect? The blind can see that there are core disciplinary, social factors, poor conflict resolution skills, criminal and gang networks and other issues at play, which a band-aid of more sporting activities could never cure. We have a social development department which no longer engages in social programs for curbing or addressing anti-social, violent and dis-functional behaviours, so what do we expect? The families and youths at risk, who lack both the financial resources or will to seek that level of assistance, are deferred to private practitioners which they cannot afford to handle issues which any social development agency funded by tax-payers should be handling for the betterment of the community. Our priorities are completely lopsided and until we get our acts together the downward spiral will continue.

Check the trouble makers. Most of them are probably raised through the court on child support with limited parental involvement. You reap what you sow.
  • The campus is wrong (03/05/2024, 20:55) Like (0) Dislike (0) Reply
The entire school is designed badly, the noise levels are too high, it has a prison vibe to it (I have visited many prisons due to work in the UK, the similarities are striking).
There are too many children, class size is too big, the discipline is crap, there is no one stopping the drug scooter boys outside the gate from harassing/ recruiting the kids.
Go park outside the school and watch drop off / lunch / pick up and hang around to watch the movement of kids within the school at class change and you will see why there are issues.

Problems like these continue to plague the BVI high school and the MOE is sitting in CARIFTA.
Come Monday, nothing will be done to address the issue at hand.
    A complete waste of votes.

The Minister, CEO, and School Leaders should encourage police presence on ESHS campus.

Let them patrol the campus, not looking for anyone or anything. Their regular presence and positive interactions with students can help to build trust.

When the police do need to question staff and students about illegal matters, they will be ready to share information.

Immigration Officers and Customs Officers can patrol the campus and engage with staff and students as well from time to time.

One more thing...there needs to be a separate campus (actual school facility) for junior students and senior students.

I've picked up one of the security guards hitching a ride who works there in the past. He bemoaned the fact that the security guards have no powers. Apparently, they cannot take any action where there is anti-social behaviour.

I am not an expert in school campus management. I don't envy those whose responsibility it is to sort out ESHS campus. But I am sad to see innocent childrens' education being thrown under a bus like this. It is not right.
