Ernesto hits Bermuda as Cat 1 Hurricane; Major power outages & flooding

HAMILTON, Bermuda- Ernesto passed over Bermuda as a Category 1 hurricane on Saturday, August 17, 2024, causing major power outages and flooding.

As of Sunday morning, August 18, 2024, Ernesto had been downgraded into a Tropical Storm, with winds of 70 mph and was moving slowly -- heading north-northeast at only 9 mph.

According to the Member of Parliament in Bermuda, Honourable Thomas Christoper Famous, the storm lasted for about 24 hours.

“Luckily, we suffered no structural damage, but lots of rain and lots of wind,” Honourable Famous told our News Centre today, August 18, 2024.

17, 000 without electricity in Bermuda

Honourable Famous said at one point 70 percent of customers were without electricity.

“Since Saturday night the Bermuda Electric Light Company has been out doing restoration. Presently, there are about 17, 000 customers without electricity.”

Meanwhile, Honourable Famous said all roads are clear and grocery stores are reopening.

Ernesto made landfall in the Virgin Islands as a tropical storm on Tuesday night, August 13, 2024, leaving fallen trees and electrical poles in its path.

    But yet the people living here amongst us think it's only BVI does have power outages during hurricanes.
