Emmett Caines KO Tournament to kick off BVIFA 2023/24 Football Season on Saturday
The drawing for the knockout tournament, which will conclude on October 17, 2023, took place at the synthetic football field in Greenland on Sunday, September 10, 2023.
The teams vying for the trophy and other prizes will be defending League Champions One Love, President’s Cup Champions Wolues, Virgin Gorda United, Rebels, Islanders, Lion Heart, Positive, Old Madrid, Sugar Boys, and Panthers.
The BVIFA is yet to release the final fixture for this weekend’s games; however, two games will be played on Tortola on Saturdays and Sundays from and one game on Virgin Gorda on Sundays.
Who was Emmett C. Caines?
The late Emmett C. Caines had a 17-year active involvement in the BVI Football Association, between 1975 and 1992.
As a player, he was a sweeper back for many teams during his career, including Police in the 70s. Emmett was player/manager on teams that he formed, such as Queen City Strikers and the Popeye Bombers.
He was also a part of the national team during the 1970s and represented the territory in games at home and in St Maarten, St Croix and St Thomas.
In 1986, Emmett was the manager of the national team that won the Leeward Islands Football Tournament in Montserrat. He went on to manage national teams for 11 years and accompanied teams to other countries including Antigua & Barbuda, Curacao, St Kitts-Nevis, and the Cayman Islands.
According to the BVIFA, after his retirement from Football and he was no longer a member of the BVIFA, Emmett remained as a consultant to the association and could be counted on to assist in whatever way he was asked to do.
‘Football was Emmett’s # 1 sport’- Alvera Maduro-Caines
The late Emmett C. Caines was the husband of former legislator Alvera Maduro-Caines.
Maduro-Caines, who was at the drawing on Sunday, expressed appreciation to the BVIFA for having the tournament in honour of her late husband.
She said football was her late husband’s number one sport.
Mr Caines, who was known as the ‘Sixth District’s First Gentleman’ passed away on Friday, August 26, 2022, at Dr D. Orlando Smith Hospital in Road Town.
