Elderly woman alleges $$ stolen from her at Peebles Hospital
Ms Euril Charles, who is believed to be 76 years old according to a relative, was admitted at Peebles Hospital after it was discovered that a pre-existing condition had warranted in-patient care. "It was something she had before but you know she managed to get it under control for a while now but when she when to do a check up they see it again and had to admit her," related a relative.
Considering her age, Ms Charles cannot work and being from not such a wealthy economic stead, she depended on the kind will of relatives and close friends to for a few dollars which she adds much value to and is usually very careful not to spend unnecessarily. "She is not rich and the little money she get she does put up and spend only when necessary because you know is her nieces, nephews and other who would give her a small piece every now-and-then and then they going to thief it from the poor woman, Peebles terrible man and it’s not the first time but she never said anything before because it was nothing to talk about before but now all the woman money they gone with," said a close relative of Ms Charles.
A woman who also claimed to be a relative of Ms Charles had called in to the CBN Channel 51 programme ‘BVI Forum’ with Edmund Maduro on April 27, 2013 to complain about the alleged incident.
Stress is one condition considered to have a very serious effect on anyone much less an elderly woman and this is a second condition that has been thrown on Ms Charles as she has been in a very shaken state since she woke up in the Female Surigcal Ward of Peebles Hospital to discover her $580, which she had reportedly secured in her bag, was all gone.
Explaining the incident, the relative who spoke to Virgin Islands News Online on condition of anonymity said that Ms Charles had taken out the money on Wednesday night, counted it, secured it in her purse, wrapped the purse in a towel and placed the parcel to the bottom of her bag and locked it and went to bed.
Much to her surprise when she arose Thursday morning the towel parcel was at the top of the bag and her cash was allegedly all gone. "Every cent they gone with, every last cent the woman had now she so shaken we worry about her they have no heart. Every last dollar was taken out and they bare-face because they tumble the lady bag and didn’t even bother to put things back how they find it. "
According to the relative, Ms Charles didn't observe anyone looking when she was checking the cash the night prior and said, "It only had three other elderly patients on the ward and they couldn't walk."
The matter has been reported to the hospital's management and officers from the RVIPF were called in.
Both the Peebles administration and the RVIPF have confirmed that a report was made of the alleged theft and that it is being investigated. In the words of Public Information Officer for Peebles Hospital Ms Tamara Archibald-Gill, "An incident occurred and the Police have been called in and are investigating it. Any further inquiries must be directed to the Police."
So far no arrest has been made, according to the RVIPF.
