HUNTUMS GHUT, Tortola, VI- Following the groundbreaking ceremony in October 2020, the Government of the Virgin Islands has announced that the Economic Zone slated to be built in Huntums Ghut to promote entrepreneurship is now ready for tendering.

Via a media release on Monday, January 18, 2021, the government said, tenderers would be bidding for the construction of commercial buildings at the location.

Addressing the groundbreaking ceremony in October last year, Minister for Transportation, Works and Utilities and Fifth District Representative, Hon Kye M. Rymer said, the undertaking was not a ‘handout’ but a way to empower persons of the Fifth Electoral District.

“With this investment, we are adding to the development of our community because our community will now have an economic zone that will now bring a host of commercial businesses that will bring goods and services closer to your door and very important it will bring jobs and offer spin-off economic activities for the people of the community,” he said on Monday, October 19, 2020, during the groundbreaking ceremony.

Notably, as part of the plan, there will be three warehouses and each will have space for six businesses.

In addition to the businesses, there will be a mini library and a food pantry for residents in need.

Scope of works

Today’s media release stated that some of the works would encompass the erection of metal buildings that are “the most cost-effective and operationally efficient as possible”.

It further stated that the tenders should also provide all plant, labour, equipment, materials and tools essential to complete the project, as well as maintaining a clean job site, including regular removal of waste throughout the construction phase and thorough cleanup of the site upon completing the project.

Speaking on the matter, Procurement Coordinator, Mrs Ishma Rhymer stated that the successful tender would have to ensure safe practices are in place for employees at all times; and supervise the construction site to ensure that the building erection and all related construction is being carried out, according to the drawing supplied as per the construction schedule.

“Eligible tenderers are required to submit Certificates of Good Standing from the Director of the Social Security Board, National Health Insurance, the Commissioner of Inland Revenue, the Commercial Registry and other entity as outlined in the Tender Document. Tenderers must also provide a Tender Security, not less than 1% of their bid price,” the media release added.

Documents for the bid will be available as of today, January 18, 2021, and the deadline for receipt of bids will be March 9, 2021, at 10:00am.

You dont need that project to get re-elected Kye.

You need to fix the roads in this damn place, and while youre at it fix the water woes for persons who are still having issues. There is lots of work to do.
