BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI- The Eastern Branch of the BVI Diabetes Association has been revamped, paving way for the work of the association to continue in Tortola.

Dr Sharlon Lewis, President of the BVI Diabetes Association was a guest on Talking Points on ZBVI 780 AM on Monday, November 4, 2024, as November is being recognised as Diabetes Awareness Month.

Association now closer to the people in the east- Dr Lewis

The recently reopened East End/Long Look Community Centre is being looked at as a meeting place for this branch of the diabetes association.

“We realise East End and Long Look they have their own identities and it’s not all the time they want to be traversing into town to come to meetings, so we want to be closer to the people and with that since we have East End up and running, which is something we have been trying to do for a while,” Dr Lewis said.

Bringing the association to other sister islands

Dr. Lewis said with the eastern branch of the diabetes association now up and running, the association can turn its attention to the sister islands especially Virgin Gorda.

She said she was recently “challenged” by Minister for Health and Social Development Hon Vincent O Wheatley (R9) to begin a chapter there.

“I’m asking for persons interested to reach out to the Diabetes Association office, let us know you’re interested, let us know especially if you’re interested in heading one of those branches because we need a contact person...then we can work in tandem with that person so that they will be able to tell us what the needs are in the community and also to be able to do outreach just like what we’re doing here on Tortola,” Dr Lewis explained.

She added the association is not trying to keep its work just on Tortola; however, they do not have enough people involved continuing, “the more people that we have involved is the more than we can actually do.”

What exactly will the Diabetes Association be doing at the community center? Will you supply the medication or equipment we need like diabetic pens, alcohol swabs, insulin, test strips, and monitors, or just take blood samples which can be done at the clinic? At the clinic, we have to wait for them to see all patients for different things not pertaining to diabetes. Thank you.

Pure talk for real, maybe if the BVI Diabetes Association has a better president all the needs can be met. The current president are all talks, broken promises. The people of East End needs are not important to her.
