East End/Long Look Parade marred by late start, poor organization
The EE/LL Parade appeared loaded with lethargy; a stop-start effect also left many troupe members looking disenchanted and out of place. The promised excitement and fun seemingly was not materializing and a totally disorganized and late start added much frustration.
Rain interruptions didn’t help matters either; it was difficult to find a glimmer emanating from anywhere else save for the brightly coloured and well-designed costumes themselves and the fleeting smiles that interspersed the tired looks of the troupe members on occasion.
It may have simply been a domino effect coming from the tiredness left by the early morning’s Rise and Shine Tramp but it seemed more apparent that organisers may just have not put enough systems in place to execute a smooth and efficient parade yesterday.
Moments of excitement early on in the parade seemed few and far between as troupes were without music for some time with members of one troupe expressing their disappointment at having their truck forcibly attached to another troupe due to a mechanical defect with another truck.
In giving a frank assessment of the proceedings of the day, they expressed that they felt that the parade was “not organized… not organized” they added that at one point another troupe had simply made off “with our sound system that we had paid for”.
One band broke down causing a nearly hour long delay along the route but the dancers continued to entertain in spurts despite this as early along the route persons chose to watch from the comfort of their homes for the most part.
Parade felt more like a dance competitionInstead of an actual parade, troupes were seen dancing at a makeshift spot along the route making way for another troupe to take their place as they moved backward in completing a session of dancing. There was simply no sort of procession to the affairs for lengthy periods of time.
All this seemed to change somehow, as towards the very end of the procession dancers suddenly summoned the vigour that was missing all along and performed vivaciously for the many that thronged the side lines along the end of the route.
Troupes in yesterday’s EE/LL parade started off from the Chapel Hill area and tapered off at the Moviene Fahie Festiville village. Participants included recently crowned pageant queens, as was the case in the August Monday Parade held in Road Town; Moko Jumbies, the St Thomas Majorettes; the Hugga Bunch group, also from St Thomas; Treasures of the BVI; Masqueraders; Sunshine Dancers and Golden Pom Pom Girls. Some of the troupes also took part in the Road Town Parade as well.
