The Premier made the call on the observance of Earth Day 2019, today, April 22, 2019, via a video release from the Government Information Service (GIS) posted to their Facebook page.
Clean awareness
“Today is also Earth Day, which is an event observed on April 22. It is a day held to demonstrate and promote environmental awareness and calls for the protection of our planet. Earth Day is celebrated in more than 193 countries each year,” he said while sending Easter greetings to the people of the Territory.
According to Premier Fahie, “It is a privilege for us in the Virgin Islands to also join these countries for this very important and critical observance, to this end, we intend to not only talk the talk but to walk the walk [in] organizing, mobilizing and cleaning up our communities."
The Premier further noted that he is committed to lead the charge over the course of the next 6 months, “to coordinate a comprehensive clean-up of the territory under the theme, A Beautiful Virgin Islands Begins With You.”
Community Pride
He says the main objectives of the campaign are to ensure that the environment is safe, clean and healthy and to engage communities in environmental sustainability via education and awareness, which includes restoring community pride.
The Premier also notes that the initiative began on Virgin Gorda (VG) a few weeks ago through the Virgin Islands (VI) Recovery and Development Agency (RDA) and other stakeholders and will continue for the next six months.
Hon Fahie thanked local community groups and all others who have since been coming forward and taking the charge to clean their local environment.
