DYAS to relaunch VI’s youth afterschool programme in 2023

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– Minister for Education, Youth Affairs and Sports Hon Sharie B. de Castro (AL) has announced that following a several-year hiatus, the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports (DYAS) is preparing to relaunch the Afterschool Youth Development Programme on Monday, October 2, 2023.

Hon de Castro, speaking at the Third Sitting of the First Session of the Fifth House of Assembly of the Virgin Islands on Thursday, September 7, 2023, detailed that the programmes will be held at all primary and secondary public schools, Monday to Thursday, from 3:45 PM - 5:45 PM.

DYAS is regarded as the official home of Youth and Sports in the Virgin Islands and three programmes will be offered: S.T.E.A.M., Academic Tutoring and Grassroots Sports.

The Minister detailed that students will be engaged in activities that will help to improve academic success, develop physical fitness and core values, and foster social and critical thinking skills in a safe, structured and supervised environment.

Registration mandatory 

“Student registration forms are available at the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports and at all public schools. Students must be registered to be eligible for enrollment into the programme. Parents and guardians are encouraged to complete the form and submit it to the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports by Thursday, 21st September 2023,” she added.

This year also marked the return of DYAS VI Summer Camps for students on Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost van Dyke.

Hon de Castro reminded that the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports through the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports is committed to providing opportunities for our young people to develop and excel through the After School Youth Development Programme.

    This needs to be done in every district example district 7 & 8 can be at the community center and seven days church. District 4 can be at the multipurpose complex and somewhere in purcell etc etc

      There are after school lesson in some Caribbean island, it's up to you if you want to send you child though. Mostly the do is math and English

    We want some funds put into the Cadets that them can shine more and a place to call HQ cause Irma the sch was close and them like scattered chicken from place to place so please minster of education please out for the Cadets and let's get a program back on stream

    Some of these government school are still not ready!! Close the public schools. Might as well close Government offices too.

    Although this is a great idea. The government can't provide the basic teaching essentials to schools currently. Where will they find the money to sustain this program? When will we properly fund the school system?
