CHARLOTTE AMALIE, St Thomas, USVI- A female citizen of the Dominican Republic, who was arrested at the Cyril E. King Airport (CEKA) on St Thomas, US Virgin Islands (USVI) after Customs and Border Protection officers determined she had no legal status to be in the country, reportedly confessed to entering the USVI illegally from Tortola in the Virgin Islands.

Yesica Perez Pie was arrested on April 4, 2025, when she arrived at CEKA for a flight to Miami, Florida with onward connection to Hartford, Connecticut. At the airport, she was directed to secondary screening to determine her legal status.

Ms Perez Pie reportedly admitted to entering the United States illegally just over two years ago.

She said that she left her home country on April 1, 2023, on a flight to Tortola in the Virgin Islands.

$8000 for illegal crossing

Immediately after arriving in Tortola, she crossed over to St John by boat. The illegal boat crossing cost her $8000, Ms Perez Pie reportedly told CBP officers.

In her passport, agents found a BVI entry stamp dated April 1, 2023.

With no evidence of a US visa, permanent resident status, or prior permission to enter the United States, Ms Perez Pie was arrested and charged with illegal entry. She appeared before U.S. Magistrate Alan Teague on Monday, April 7, 2025.

I am trying to remember if there were ever any missing persons alert sent out after Ms Pie entered the BVI on April 1, 2023.

Obviously her whole journey was plotted out and coordinated well in advance with local assistance. So what now? Will we look deeper into our homerown human smuggling networks or will we turn a blind eye?

These folks may be illegal immigrants, but it's citizens receiving BIG money who are helping them along the way. Let justice work both ways, not just against the oppressed.

Did she really think in this day and age that she could have gotten on a flight to the UA mainland without proper legal documents? She was really taken advantage of and had unreasonable expectation that she would be able to pull this off.

The chances of her being able to pull this off was next to zero. You have to have a green card, valid travel visa, or citizenship to enter the U.S.

These human smugglers who take advantage of these people needs handcuffs on their hands as well. To take 8K from this woman and dump her on St.John to an uncertain future is criminal.

While I do not condone in anyway illegal actions, had she stayed in the USVI it is possible she would not have been detected, but no, the goal was to go to the US and stay in the Virgin Islands. She got away with it for a few years, now the party is over.

You would be surprised to know how much undocumented persons get to the mainland by plane from St. Thomas.

Please educate me. The amount of checking they do nowadays, I just don't see how anyone who does not have legal documents can get on a plane successfully to the U.S.

We don't know what documents she showed at the airport, but lets assume she had someone else passport/greencard with her picture on it. That fraudulent document would have been discovered. The fact that she was arrested reportedly at the airport says whatever document she had did not pass the smell test.

In this day and age of Trump and ICE, the checking is even more stringent. Long ago, I would say that was possible. Today no.

I once had a police officer who visited my home to see a family member who stole my green card from among personal items. I discovered it a day before my flight from St. Thomas to travel to the US. I was so distressed and started thinking who could have taken it. The only person I could think of was that police officer.

I drove down to the police headquarters in town, called them out, and confronted them because they were the only and last person in my presence at my home how could have done this. I threatened them that if they did not return my green card now, I would report them to the Commissioner of Police and had them arrest, fired, and deported.

I was right. Unfrinkenbelievable. They went back into the station, and came back my green card. Imagine that! A police officer stealing a greencard. I didn't report them after as I was so happy to get it back, but this fool really thought he could have used my green card to travel to the US with my picture on it.

Anyway, anything is possible with desperate people, so one may never know, but again, in todays world, it's next to impossible to travel to the US illegally by plane. Before the plane departs the manifest goes to Washington. If everything does not check out, the plane does not go anywhere until its sorted.

I sorry but if I had 8K to give away, I would not select the USVI as my port of destination. What in the inflation.

You are right. I should have in retrospect. Unfortunately I got back my green card from him 12 to 14 hours prior to my needing to catch the first ferry to St. Thomas to catch my flight. I was petrified. All I could think of back then was getting back my green card, making my flight and getting back to school.

I didn't want to possibly have to stay back and deal with police matters, but he really needed turning in and fired from the force. He was a crook with a badge. Sometimes, I think about what would have happened if he did not admit he stole it and not returned it. I don't know to this day how I would have got to travel to the US back then.

The amount of boats on the water vs those licensed with the registry and insured is crazy, maybe a 1 to 20 ratio.

    Blame customs

Our immigration and customs needs to take this more seriously. Are we going to let a few boat men screw up the BVI visa initiative we have with the US?! Because it could eventually be hampered as the US continues to clamp down. See things like this is why the UK needs to come and flex muscle. Behaviors like this destroys our country in the long run. Yeah we not the only country facing smuggling issues but unlike other countries that are independent, we stand to lose a lot. Everybody on Andrew's back (rightfully so), but are any of us any better? Are these boat men and some of these border officials any better? Be honest.
