ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Host of Speak out BVI on ZBVI 780 AM Doug Wheatley has called for something to be done to ensure that caroling, a long time tradition in the territory, lives on for the sake of future generations.

The usual Speak out BVI show was more a Sing out BVI, with the one hour long show dedicated to the singing of the old time Christmas carols.

His remarks came following statements by an over 70 year old caroler, who admitted that she would gladly pass on the baton to a younger person who was interested.

“We need when you are going off the stage to have young people taking over and therefore we have to coach these people in order that they would do it because this is part of our tradition,” Wheatley said.

“Culture is very, very important, in the history of any people and I think we can’t just allow it to fade away. We know what it has been like; we have experienced it, but what about my grandchildren, your grandchildren, our great grandchildren they would never be blessed with what we were blessed with. So I think some way or the other we have to find a way to try to keep this tradition.”

Territory without a culture?

Mr Wheatley added that while the people want to become very modern “a country without a culture is no country at all. And this is the sort of thing that sustained us over the years and this is why I work so hard along with others to keep the thing going.”

The outspoken host promised that persons can expect to hear more caroling as Christmas draws nearer.

Meantime, a caller to the programme said “It seems like everything gone; the food, dance, culture. In the BVI every part of our culture gone, young people not in them kind of thing,” he lamented.

It's not. Not the way it use to be. It was a joy to wait up or be awaken by the carolers. Have the dummy table for them and all the hoo-haa but the generation today have one thing In mind. Christmas for them is time to ROB and THIEF people joy at gun point. That's all they know and look forward to at Easter Festival and Christmas time. No Christmas spirit anymore. I know when you could've smell Christmas in the air, but everything has faded away. I know things will change but when you go down/up island they enjoying the SAME THINGS see use to have. Lights for daysssss. Decorations for days ands the Christmas spirit is rampant. They believe In celebrating this time of year with a passion SO "CAY" YOU STOP THERE AND TALK SHIT BOUT ISLAND MAN MINISTER. The BVI in whatever category you put it has gone to the damn dogs and it's out fault. We spoil our children hence they know NOTHING about our traditions. They to KUTE to walk all night from door to door belting out at the top of their lungs, singing off key, refusing to be hoarse the other day and that's the end fun part. Festival loose its juice, Easter loose its juice and Christmas has last its juice. That's why people choose to go visiting another mans country at those times of the year. Shame

Caroling, an olde time Xmas tradition, is another section of the VI cultural universe that is being striped away. At the current rate of cultural lost, VI culture of olde will be just a distant memory and a new culture will be taking form. The Xmas tradition is dying on the vine. Caroling an event that was common place in celebrating the birth of Christ. What changed?

Growth and development and associated social change contributed to the decline in this cultural event. To put in economic terms, when families were at similar economic levels communities were closer and embraced the culture of the village and of the VI. Residents waited eagerly to hear the joyful carols on Xmas and New Year. Today is a different story. Xmas and New Year are just another day. Many residents with a little snow on the roof long Xmas of olde but Cmas is just a dream. The VI diaspora abroad lament about the death of Xmas. Lack of Xmas celebrations of olde is deterring them from visiting at Xmas time. A dream that is in the rear view mirror. Like other culture, Caroling is heading for the cultural "dung heap".

Your points are taken, but why is it that we always seem to be waiting on someone else to take action? We want "someone" to deal with the issues we identify but no one does because everyone else is also waiting on "someone". We need to get off our duffs and deal with the situation. Instead of coming home and behaving like tourists and sightseers perhaps the Virgin Islanders abroad can form a band or join with one of the existing ones, or find some other way of helping to preserve this part of our heritage.
