‘Don’t be afraid to stand up to your boss!’ – Doug Wheatley
He was speaking on his 3D Show on Friday October 23, 2015 on ZBVI 780 AM during which he addressed a number of topical issues, including the National Health Insurance (NHI) and employment in the territory.
It was during making comments about the latter issue that Mr Wheatley gave some opinions about what he believes is prevalent in the Virgin Islands.
“My experience here in the BVI has suggested to me that a lot of the employees are afraid of their bosses,” he said.
He said that sometimes he may call a place to get information or clarity on a particular issue and the staff who takes the call seems so fearful to approach persons higher up the chain of command to get that additional information that might be needed.
“Now I can’t understand why there would be fear of bosses. We are all people. We don’t have horns and so why are we afraid of a boss?” he asked.
He said too that sometimes a boss might give instructions which creates a bigger problem and sometimes he or she is not aware of the unintended consequences of their actions but their underlings are aware.
“But they are too afraid to say to the boss that it is going to lead to unintended consequences should it be pursued,” he said.
“Instead of saying that they keep quiet about it and mumble to themselves and allow the boss to make terrible mistakes and there are many examples where mistakes like that are made. Don’t be afraid to talk to your boss if you see something is going wrong,” said Mr Wheatley.
