Donelle Smith is the VI’s 1st Grammy Award winner
Smith won Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media for the Barbie Album at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards at Crypto.com Arena in California on Sunday night, February 4, 2024.
He is now the first Virgin Islander to have won a Grammy Award.
Smith received the award for his role as one of the key engineers behind the acclaimed Barbie movie soundtrack.
‘Perfect timing kind of situation’
Speaking to JTV Channel 55, in an exclusive interview following his Grammy Award, Smith shared that his involvement in the Barbie project was unexpected, stemming from a studio session with Trinidad James, a major player in the music industry.
Mr Smith said Trinidad James, alongside collaborators Young Fyre and Kaine, opened the door to a project that would go on to make musical history.
“The label was finishing up the soundtrack for the Barbie movie, so Kaliii was actually coming to the studio that night to record her verse for the song. She was coming to work on another song too, so you could say it was like a perfect timing kind of situation.”
Meanwhile, Theron James of Rock City was awarded the Songwriter of the Year (Non-Classical) award.
He is the second in the history of the USVI to have received a Grammy Award.
