It was an extraordinary comeback for a former president who refused to accept defeat four years ago, sparked a violent insurrection at the US Capitol, was convicted of felony charges and survived two assassination attempts.
Trump defeated Vice President Kamala D. Harris on promises to turbocharge the economy and deport undocumented immigrants by the millions.
Harris, who is the first woman of colour to win a major party nomination for president, took the reins of the Democratic campaign after President Joseph R. Biden abandoned his bid for a second term, a decision made in the wake of a disastrous June debate performance.
Harris is yet to concede or address supporters. Dejected crowds left her watch party well before the final result came in.
A nation deeply divided
According to NBC News, Trump-the most polarising figure in modern American politics- now must preside over a nation deeply riven by social, racial, cultural and economic hostilities that he has strategically exploited on the campaign trail for nearly a decade. It was, for him, a successful strategy. The last time a defeated U.S. president avenged his loss was Grover Cleveland — in 1892.
The Republican told jubilant crowds in Florida: "America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate."
Of the seven crucial swing states, Trump won North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, and is ahead in Michigan, Nevada, and Arizona.
Republicans have also taken the Senate back from Democrats after flipping a string of seats.

Iflation started under the Trump administration as did manufacturing job losses, check the facts, the price of goods increasing started after the tariffs were introduced.
The only meaniful wage increases over the last eight years occurred under the Biden Administration, the deficit increased after the tax breaks were given to the Rich. There is no evidence of Trump doing anything to benifits the common folk except conning them.
